Canadian Art Gallery Leaves Imprint On Belfast Print Workshop

As part of an international art and cultural exchange Belfast Print Workshop have brought the feel of Quebec to the Cathedral Quarter. Engramme is a print studio and art gallery, very much like our very own Belfast Print Workshop, and last year they produced a memorable and significant artistic project to celebrate the 400th Anniversary of the city of Quebec. This exciting exhibition has now come to Belfast!

Engramme’s goal for this exhibition was to capture and preserve the memories of printmaking artists who have visited Quebec and artists who want to explore the city with their imagination. The concept behind the exhibition was to create “a meaningful artistic heritage around the event’s theme of encounters.”

The 400 miniature prints in the exhibition enable the audience to illustrate and to stimulate their recollection of such “encounters”, whether real or imaginary. To achieve this goal they accepted entries from artists not just from Quebec City but also the work of artists from across Canada and around the world.

For over 35 years, Engramme, just like Belfast Print Workshop, have been involved in an annual collaboration with artists of varying artistic and geographic backgrounds. These “encounters” have facilitated a vast assortment of exchanges with a complex and rich network of cultural and artistic inspirations for everyone. The imaginary journeys and the recollections suggested in the exhibition’s works come together to create a surprising patchwork of unusual perspectives on Quebec City. This medley of original artworks provides a comprehensive vista of the city’s history, epitomizing the relationships between Quebec City, its residents, and its visitors. The title of the exhibition ‘Soulscape’ intrinsically intertwines the concept of a portrait of the city’s appearance and an attempt to capture the very Soul of Quebec itself.
