Yesterday in Belfast

I took a dander into Belfast yesterday forgot it was half term, so there were Childfren everywhere, in their new hair cuts out and about shopping and looking. It's funny when you dont have children some holidays pass you buy. While everyone else is looking for things to occupy their childfren over the break, you forget it even happens.
Anyway as I walked along I thought about the schools that all these childfren are going to , what are they being taught? who do they socialise with? is there any intergration in their lives of different religions? IS that goign to have an impact long term on their lives? who they have their first crush on,if they finfish school. I was talking to a man who had gone to school in a loyalist area of Belfast and he was saying that when he was at school if you did music you were a TARGET, you had to move out of class half an hour before everyone else, just to give you a head start or you would get beaten up. He went on to play the drums in a skinhead band. Lost out in alot of his education. Has gone back to education as an adult, gone right through from doing literacy to lots of different courses.I cant help thinking that if we didnt have segragated schools he wouldf not have had the same experience.He would have had an opportunity to mix with different people and life might have been a bit different for him.

So when all you mummys and daddys think about how you dont want your childrens school to be properly integrated. Think about society as a whole or maybe you dont care. Maybe you just want your children to do well and you have no social concious at all.
