happenstance…’- 7 ½ hour performance/installation by Shaun Caton.

Sunday, 6 September 2009, 2-9.30pm

'happenstance…’ is a unique, site specific, performance by Shaun Caton.
Using organic elements such as clay, sticks, twine and genuine prehistoric artefacts as psychic triggers, the artist constructs and interacts with an enclave that exists outside of our time and space.
Caton’s performances are multi-layered and resonate with great psychological intensity. He presents the viewer with an enigmatic situation, in which drawings are made over extended time periods onto the walls of the space.
Much of his work is inspired by imagery of prehistoric cultures and their rituals. He seldom gives interpretations to his work, only acknowledging that it originates from an entered ‘trance state’.
Typically, Shaun Caton will only make 2 or 3 live works a year and spends a lot of time in mental preparation, making hundreds of drawings and evolving into the performance psyche beforehand.
