The Arts Council of Northern Ireland is to gift its historic art collection to museums and galleries in Northern Ireland. With almost 1,200 works in the collection, the gifting scheme will increase opportunities for local people to view examples of contemporary and modern art by artists from Northern Ireland.
Purchased between 1943 and 1999, the collection includes drawings, prints, photographs, sculpture, ceramics, installations and mixed media from a range of established and rising artists.
The Arts Council is now inviting applications from museums and galleries in Northern Ireland which have Museums Libraries and Archives (MLA) accredited status and who are seeking to develop, or start, a permanent collection of contemporary art which includes works by artists from Northern Ireland.
Arts Council Chief Executive Roisin McDonough explained: “The Arts Council Collection forms an important part of the public collections in Northern Ireland for a number of reasons, most importantly the insight it gives into Northern Irish Art History in the twentieth century.
“In gifting the collection, we would expect the Arts Council’s tradition of lending works to continue and that the new public custodians of the works will make them widely available for exhibition, so that as many people as possible will have the opportunity to see these historically significant pieces.”
Applications must be submitted to the Arts Council of Northern Ireland by Thursday 4th June, 4pm.
