The University of Ulster Masters of Fine Arts Department and Platform are proud to present:

The Channel Development Clinic is available to small businesses and social enterprises interested in exploring the idea of exporting for the first time.
Taking place on the 27 May 2010 in The Edge, May’s Meadow, Belfast, BT1 3PH from 9.30am until 4.30pm this workshop is designed to give first time exporters practical information on how to sell your businesses product or services into new markets outside of Northern Ireland.
WHO SHOULD PARTICIPATE?
Open to small businesses and social enterprises with limited or no experience of exporting this workshop is an essential for any business with the ambition to grow into new geographical markets.
Participating businesses located in the Belfast City Council will have the opportunity to avail of 12 hours of one to one mentoring with an experienced export consultant after the workshop to assist them in entering new export markets.

Balls in North Belfast and strange goings on in Hillsborough
My very busy schedual has taken me all over the place in the last few days from Thursday I went to the opening of a very acomplished painter at Queens street studios Angela Hackett paintings of India wonderful textures and textile patterns of Indian life. Then to Catylst where they opened the boxes buried 14 years ago in the floor of exhibition space as well as having an exhibition of people who have been directors over that time as well. There are some interesting names Susan McWilliams, Peter Richards, Brendan O Neill, Dan Shipsides, Gary Shaw and I have to say some less familar names someone said of the boxes "who are all those people that I have never heard off" and I suppose maybe it will make them think that for every person who 14 years on is still praticing in some shape or form their own work there are all those people who for what ever reason even though they have talent and good possibilities. Just don't get anywhere with what they do. A little lesson there for some hopefuls.
Friday night I went to the Ulster orchestra and could'nt help thinking what are the possibilities of this audience ever having a look at the art going around Belfast at the moment, the interestihng underground stuff? Well I did notice a man there who I saw at Gary Laws talk, but the chances of the two linking would be pretty slim.
Saturday I went up to the childrens festival in the Waterworks where Red apple arts, Ngaire Jackson and Clare Lawson were installing their floating spheres on the water. They looked fantastic and as it was a beautuful day there were thousands of people out and about in the park watching the acts and eating and looking.There were two tents filled with craft and bits and pieces and making and doing and thousands of children. The arts council should be very happy with the turn out and it seems to have put the event on the map in as far as putting North Belfsst on the Map goes. I believe it made the 6 o'clock news.
On Sunday I went up to Hillsborough castle garden festival. Tucked in the back of the grounds Mo Molam gave Praxis a site where they have a learning space for their client groups. It has an organic cafe and well worth a visit any time of the year. But I found the event it's self a bit strange. Very well organised but I could'nt help thinking about the guy selling Australian OLive Oil, has the world gone mad?? what its it's carbon foot print?? why import olive oil from the other side of the world when , Greece, France etc has tonnes of the stuff. Maybe the people in Greece would not be rioting if people supported it's economy a bit more. Then I though it was ironic that the Rotary club were collecting Money to send emergency relief supplies to counties that are expereincing difficluties due to climate change!!!! All the good people were dropping in theri money in the buckets to support the good cause. No doubt after buying their Australian Olive oil and their cheap imported goods from alot of the other stands. The world has gone mad................. and the volcano keeps erupting.

Bluebells and the sea
Dont forget the bluebells are out again- beautiful bluebell woods in Strangford and Portaferry if your looking for a nature fix. Just ask anyone local. My exhibition has been extended until the 4th June so if you feel like a visit this weekend have a look in at Strawberry fair. Also opening is Celicia Stephens and Sara Brown in the art loft in Portaferry. Just above the Tourist infomration centre.

The Royal Ulster Academy’s 129th Annual Exhibition, which aims to highlight the best in contemporary and traditional visual arts practice, will take place from 15 October to 14 November 2010 in the Ulster Museum, Belfast.
Artists are invited to submit a maximum of two works in any medium for consideration. Work will be selected anonymously by a jury and a range of prizes will be awarded by an independent adjudicator.

If you are using the online entry form, remember to download and attach labels to your work prior to delivery at the relevant drop point. If you would like to receive a hard copy by post please reply to this email.
Notification regarding the outcome of the selection process will be circulated between 6 -10 September via post. Unselected works can be collected on 25 September (Dublin) and 26 September (Belfast).
The Annual Exhibition will be accompanied by a full colour catalogue. To encourage public participation we will facilitate a range of educational events including school tours, in-schools engagement, artist’s talks, public tours and workshops.

In darkest February 1996, the members of Catalyst Arts were invited to fill an empty box marked Art Rebels for the annual members show. 79 boxes were returned, and exhibited anonymously. The floorboards in the gallery were lifted up and the boxes placed between the beams, to be sealed off until 2010 when they would be unearthed and reopened. Now, in 2010 they reach their final destination. The Art Rebels boxes, like Catalyst, have survived the moves, the crises, the parties and the controversies of 14 years of artist led mayhem.
Art Rebels is a celebration of the creativity and ambition of the people that have made this possible- the directors who gave up two years of their lives to Catalyst. All of the exhibiting artists have served on the committee at some point from 1994 onwards; many have gone on to success as artists and curators, even being nominated for the Turner Prize, and others have taken on significant roles in the arts infrastructure of the UK and Ireland.
Art Rebels brings many of these people back together for the first time, with performances, discussions and workshops running alongside the gallery exhibition.
Cherie Driver will be working with Catalyst's extensive archive of art projects, publications and artifacts, making it accessible to the public and becoming an integral part of the exhibition.

It is an innovative programme to help small businesses and social enterprises to identify and develop new sales opportunities in the public and private sectors. It aims to provide participants with the knowledge to identify and respond to sales opportunities in these sectors and then to tender more effectively.
The programme will start in May/June 2010 and will combine 3 elements. These are:
· Procurement Diagnostic – to evaluate your readiness to enter into the procurement process.
· Five Procurement Workshops – designed to help you identify public sector opportunities, understand tender documentation, construct tender responses, develop consortiums and receive feedback on unsuccessful tenders.
· Individual Business Mentoring – to support you as you identify and respond to tender opportunities.

A Feminist Peace: How Do We Get There?

Aims
The Hanna’s House Summer School will be a vibrant, colourful and inspiring event for women. It will combine both a deep exploration of the key issues raised through our series of peacebuilding seminars (2008-10) with a rich cultural and social engagement. It is envisioned that connections between diverse communities of women will be created throughout the three days and that an organic cross-learning process will develop. It is hoped that this will lead to future projects that will support a critical feminist analysis of women’s role in peace building across all spheres (for example, within intimate, family and community relationships, as well public and professional relationships, and including women’s role in cross-community, bi-lateral and international peace negotiations). The opportunity to develop new insights, knowledge and networks, as a result of dialogue and debate, will help to empower women and support their access into decision making and leadership roles in Irish society.
Objectives:
To open up dialogue between women in the North and South, by discussing the legacy of the conflict and the importance of women’s role in the transformation of Ireland to a peaceful society.
To explore critical perspectives on the implications of peace building initiatives in the North and South addressing ideological as well as pragmatic implications.
To promote a critical feminist analysis of post-conflict peace building initiatives, including UN Resolution 1325.
To raise awareness of the issue of violence against women, during times of armed conflict and ‘peace’ and to discuss international mechanisms and the implementation of human rights law to support women’s security concerns, e.g. UNSC Resolution 1820.
To explore a critical perspective on the potential and limitations of truth recovery processes for enabling acknowledgment of women’s experiences of war and violence, bringing justice for violations and creating institutional and structural change.

Bertie Ahern, Gary Shaw, David Ervine -what a title.
Yesterday I went to the Assembly, it was really quiet hardly a sinner around? or maybe that's the wrong thing to say?? The staff looked unhassled and the view was fantastic. So are today's elections going to change anything???? are we going to get a hung parliament over in the UK or not?? What impact will it have here? just one more swirl in the political energy of the system?? Politics is a wired thing shifting and moving from one thing to the next, perceived grievances ?? now what are they. Power shifts!! it's funny what shifts them why does it get this way.??
One of the days when I worked on the Peace line I was looking at a protest of people the police trying to deal with a potential riot, the media and I thought to myself. At one time this was a field, filled with grass, maybe a wooded area. What happened what man made maneuverings made this activity happen in from of my eyes at this time? What socialisation and man made manipulation has occurred for this drama to be happening now?
Do we all as a society have something to do with it? do our votes have something to do with it?? Who is behind the dissident threat? is it really dissidents? what man made fear is going to make you vote the way you are going to vote today? If you vote.
What structure are you voting to uphold, shift, change.
What about the field? at one time this little province of ours was a grassy woodland. What energy made it as it was? what energy is going to help it heal??
Do you recognise that it needs healed?? do you need healed??? What is your grievance really?what is your perceived threat?? what do you lack inside that makes you want to be spiteful?? is it your self esteem?You see what happens when you go to the Assembly what runs through your head? Do you think that we can all get back to remembering that at some point this Provence of ours was a grassey woodland???
Tonight if your feeling political and want to see a difference being made it's Bertie Ahern speaking at the David Ervine memorial lecture in the Cathedral quarter arts festival Black Box. I'd say whoever organised that remembers at one time it was a grassy woodland this divided country/ city /people whatever of ours.
If you want your eyes to be boggled not you mind instead go to the Naughton Gallery at six where Gary Shaw will be reveling his solo show there is something quite special about colours that vibrate beyond, beyond. So interesting to think that he is colour blind. What tricks your minds play on us. There is an artist talk on Saturday 8 May 1pm. Gary is a decent guy and I'm really looking forward to seeing the show.
Belfast Print workshop also has an artist talk on SNAP the Alberta Print makers Representative over from Canada to support the exhibition the Gallery has on there at the moment 7pm.

The production team are looking for Northern Irish male musicians to play members of The Outcasts, Rudi, The Hopeless Cases, The Tear Jerkers and The Undertones.
There will be auditions on Sunday 9th May from 12 til 5 at Sonic Academy (25 Talbot Street, 1st Floor Midtown Centre, Belfast, BT1 2LD).
If you are between 16 and 25, male, and are a front man, or play guitar, drums or bass come along. If you have any promo material of you and your band bring it with you.
You won’t be required to play at this stage, but you will be asked to read a short scene. Your audition will be for the directors, not in front of other performers.
Be prepared to stay for a couple of hours, we'll see people in order of arrival.
DETAILS OF OTHER ROLES WILL BE SENT OUT TO AGENTS VERY SHORTLY.

First, on Thursday morning, we have the official launch of Resounding Rivers at the Waterfront Hall, Belfast. After an introduction by Matt Green, we host a panel discussion on SOUND AND THE CITY with Dr Gascia Ouzounian, an expert in sound installation art at the Sonic Arts Research Centre, Paul Clarke, lecturer in Architecture at University of Ulster, and Adam Turkington, Arts and Community Co-ordinator at the Waterfront Hall.

The discussion will consider our acoustic environment and what this tells us about the city; sound installation; and music and art performance in public.

ARTIST'S TALK THIS THURSDAY @ 7PM
We are proud to announce that Linda Jules a visiting artist from the Society of Northern Alberta Print-artists is coming all the way from Canada to give a short talk about her work.
Linda is currently exhibiting along with some of her Canadian counterparts at Belfast Print Workshop, we will be hosting a late night opening this Thursday to showcase the exhibition entitled 'Prospectus' which will run until the end of May.
This exhibition marks the start of an exciting year long cultural exchange between Canadian and Northern Irish printmakers. This is a chance to see the subject matter and artistic techniques that are currently being employed by our Canadian contemporaries.
