On behalf of the Royal Ulster Academy, I would like to thank you for entering your work for selection in our forthcoming Annual Exhibition at the Northern Bank, Belfast and I am delighted to inform you that your piece has been selected.
This year’s entry level was unprecedented with 1454 submissions from 900 artists. This increase, combined with the challenges of a smaller venue, presented our selection panel with a very difficult task and resulted in just over 13% of the total number of artworks selected.
In the coming weeks we will be preparing the exhibition venue, arranging the catalogue and working on publicity for the exhibition. I shall shortly be sending you an invitation which admits two only for the Opening Evening on Thursday 1 October 2009. Due to the popularity of the Preview, and Health and Safety Regulations, I regret we will be unable to accept requests for extra invitations. In the meantime I will keep you up to date with any other exhibition developments via email.

Nancy Mauro-Flude a.k.a sister0 is an artist and researcher in the field of
performing art and experimental media. Her art work is poetically invested with the
electronic activist movement and she often highlights the importance of the internet
and paraphernalia as a medium, meeting place and information source.

Jesse Darling is a multi-media sculptor, performance artist and "iFlaneur" who works
with both old and new technologies. Trained in dance and physical theatre as well as
fine art, she is working on a series of experimental collaborations both in
real-time and online, exploring themes of collectivism and bricolage: set in the
"spaces between places" where the ghosts get into the machine.
Sister0 and Jesse Darling, who have worked together previously on a number of
projects in Vienna and London, will each bring a completed work to this
collaboration: together and individually they will explore the possibilities and
limits of these works. They will choreograph a new work for the space partially in
response to these works, and partially as a result of experimental sessions @ PS2.

Sketching Draws a Crowd at Belfast Print Workshop!
Since the turn of the millennium The Campaign For Drawing has been an annual event throughout the UK. Every October, more than 1000 venues, from village halls and nursery schools to national museums and castles, take part in the Campaign's flagship event, The Big Draw. The Campaign has created a new regard for the value of drawing to help people see, think, invent and take action. The Campaign For Drawing explores the therapeutic values of this underrated art form and encourages those who think they cant draw to have a go. It connects generations and communities, showing that drawing can be an enjoyable public activity as well as a private passion. In collaboration with this National Event Belfast Print Workshop will be exhibiting a show exploring the many facets of drawing. BPW have a considerable amount of talented artists as members and they have each been asked to showcase a print along side their preliminary sketches allowing the viewer to gain a greater insight into how these gifted printmakers create such emotive artworks.

Dear ladies (though not exclusively, men are welcome),
I am doing a project in Belfast from August 22-29 at the S.H.A.C. which is on Writers Square opposite St Annes Cathedral. It is part of Capitalyst week and will run in conjunction with the Catalyst Gallery.
I plan to turn the little disabled flat into a sweat shop with a bunch of sweaty artists working as if on a conveyer belt, each making their own mark on the paper which moves down the line and so on, producing at the end of the line a multiple original art work. You will of course be paid for your labours, in line with the basic sweat shop pay scheme, which after tax, national insurance, pension and devaluation is 2p per day, 1p for half a day. Hours will be 1000-1500 with I hour for lunch. Split shifts available. A rota will be set up, please clock in and out on arrival.
The work which is now owned by the company will be put up for sale. Seconds will be sold in the factory shop outlet at a reduced price. The best work will be packaged and exported to the Catalyst Gallery.
Profits from sales will go to the Managing director (me) and probably be spent on expenses such as large lunches with the board (you).
Applications for factory workers will be assessed on grounds of equal opportunity disregarding race, colour, religion and sex. All applications to charlotteandrew@mac.com, please mark the form S.H.A.C.

With each new project the boundaries between living, working, private and public change. It is organised by Sighle and Sinéad Bhreathnach-Cashell and these spaces are currently being provided by SHAC Housing Association. Projects so far include residence: Flat 1, House/Home in a house on the Shore Road and ongoing events and residencies in Flat 4.
Flat 4 is our artist led space located in the Donegall Street flats in Belfast city centre. Each month it hosts a variety of artists in residence (AiR) who’s activities range from film screenings and workshops to open studios and tea parties. If so, the WEA and Belfast City Council have the programme for you. We are offering a short, accessible programme aptly named ‘Creativity Thirst’ to help anyone who is considering self employment or gaining additional income in the Creative Industries develop the necessary skills.
Due to the funding support of Belfast City Council and the European Regional Development Fund through the Northern Ireland Sustainable Competitiveness Programme. “Creativity Thirst” is offered FREE to the learner and will commence in September. The programme, follows on from the very successful pilot which took place last year and is included in the “Blueprint for Northern Ireland”, issued by the Creative and Cultural Industries Skill Sector. Content is accredited by CCEA and the Open College Network Northern Ireland. Anyone with a level 2 qualification or above in their skill area living in the Belfast area and who is considering self employment or gaining additional income in the Creative Industries is welcome to apply. Skills can include: music, film, photography, textiles, craft, digital imaging, etc.

Small groups of people going to remote-ish and pertinent locations to watch films and artist videos.
This is the launch of artist Dan Shipsides’ ongoing project of informally showing artist and feature films in interesting remote locations. It utilises a T5* generation VW van, converted as a campervan to screen videos in remote locations (screen, video projector and petrol generator).
The T5 field cinema is supported by a forum which will bring together people, films and locations. Participants can use the forum to involve themselves and help initiate or propose screening events.

It’s Belfast based with potential screening locations initially within an hour or two drive of the city - but anyone can take part via the forum and potentially in person.
T5 field cinema is launched as part of FIX 09 – the 8th Catalyst Arts performance art biennial, which this year focuses on participatory aspects of contemporary live art practice. Screenings will take place during the week of the festival, which runs from from 26 September - 4 October 2009.

The T5 field cinema is supported by a forum which will bring together people, films and locations. Participants can use the forum to involve themselves and help initiate or propose screening events.

It’s Belfast based with potential screening locations initially within an hour or two drive of the city - but anyone can take part via the forum and potentially in person.
T5 field cinema is launched as part of FIX 09 – the 8th Catalyst Arts performance art biennial, which this year focuses on participatory aspects of contemporary live art practice. Screenings will take place during the week of the festival, which runs from from 26 September - 4 October 2009.

Write! Down are delighted to be hosting a reading by internationally recognised novelist, John Banville, at the church, Old Court, Strangford, 19th September 2009, 8.30pm. John Banville is a writer with a luminous literary career which includes being awarded the Man Booker Prize (2005) for his novel 'The Sea'. He is also the author of a series of crime novels under the pen-name Benjamin Black. He is accompanied on the evening by Ruby Colley - whose captivating music is infused with influences of Easter Europe, the natural world; and the sea.

Life after art college part 10
I know that with one thing and another I have not written about this for a while I left off in Spain. Where I got married (long story I'll leave that for the biography)I arrived back in London to my sister with my new husband. Thinking we were going to stay in London but dear old Northern Ireland was calling us back. I received in the post information about an international designers programme, linking Irish designers with Irish company's to help them produce new products for the Irish gift wear market. It was run by N.I.S.B.I the Northern Ireland small business institute now defunct and run by Michele Rusk. Michele had completed a degree in Fashion and after a while went back to do an Masters of Business administration and started off the women in Business programme at NISBI.
Michele knew that there were lots of talented young people in Ireland bit they were not necessarily getting the opportunities to link with industry here. I was excepted on the programme and was linked with Glentara knitwear on the Done gal Road we went through intensive business training in Ireland and Pace university in new York. With one research visit to New York and Los Angeles to look at the gift wear market. I identified the knitted throw as the product I was to produce and quietly worked away on a range to see if I could get a distributor. The importance of that designers programme can not be under estimated. It helped me look at business in a professional way and helped link all the different strands of market development.
During this time I was staying at home with my mum and travelling up on the bus staying with one of the other girls on the programme during the week. I used to walk up the donegal road until the tit for tat killings were going on. At which point I stopped and got the bus. I remember one day going into work and one of the people who worked there had been shot at coming to work.Not good. It kinda made me wonder what on earth is the point of designing highly evolved and designed products for the US market when people were getting shot trying to make them.
Something else the programme helped me with was getting used to staying in hotels, I remember a beautiful one at the side of central park in new York in particular. basic rates as we were linked to Pace University. Events in the Fitzwilliam hotel New York and the Irish Trade board. Anyway I produced the throw range we had a launch in the design building (now defunct) near where the Golden Thread now is. I went back out to NY and got a distributor and the company kept me on part time to develop the business. Around this time like many artists people I was getting "why don't you become an art teacher" well I worked part time in Down Academy with 1st and second years, weird to be the one teaching and not being taught but it got me over a fear of standing in front of youngsters.But it didn't make me want to do it full time. I did it for a year part time and knew it was not for me.
The marriage didn't survive the designers programme but I did and at the end of the experience I was far more clued in business wise and much more focused about what I wanted to achieve. Still poor but what the heck, money don't make you happy;-)you just gotta add on those life experiences.

Tall ships are gone ;-(
Well what did you think about the tall ships I have to say I have never seen so many people in Belfast. There are so many things that they have in Belfast that people stay away from but for some reason the Tall ships caught everyones imagination. I went down on 2 nights Thursday and Saturday. Saturday on the Odessey side what I really saw was that for the first time the marina at the back of the odessey started to look a bit like the computer added drawing of the redevelopment of the Titanic quater. It's supposed to double the size of the population of Belfast, but who knows what will happen to the economy in the meantime??
What was interesting about the crowd was it was a real mix of Northern Ireland Society with a few voices from South of the border as well, people were randomly walking around not quite sure where to go and on cycling home I did get asked by a confused couple "where on earth was the M1" ?I'm not sure what the final visitor numbers were but I think Belfast did it's self proud. Not much Police about but there did'nt seem to need any ? I'm sure the would tell you different. The only hiccup I saw/heard was the tanoy on Saturday night telling everyone that the event was over, it suddenly started cutting out and sounded as if the Lepracauns were taking over ;-)but sure did'nt it make it more authintic for the visitors???
So there you go another change in the Belfast landscape actually being able to cope with such an event on such a scale, the pubs in town were packed and life was everywhere.

Ballycastle Creative Writers want to take you to the Island (11 - 13 September 2009).
The 'Let me take you to the island' Rathlin Island residential literary festival is back this year for its tenth anniversary! There are workshops in poetry, song, film, stage and short story. The weekend begins when you board the Rathlin Ferry from Ballycastle Harbour at 4.30pm on Friday for the short crossing to the Island and continues on apace until the return journey on Sunday. Presiding artist / facilitators include Dermot Bolger (novel writing), David Duggan (writing for stage); Kate Newmann (poetry); Ruth Carr (poetry); Colum Sands (songwriting); Teresa Godfrey (screenwriting); Damian Gorman (six rules for writing anything!).

Belfast will play host to a magnificent spectacle, from 13 - 16 August, as the final port of the Tall Ships Atlantic Challenge 2009
Local trainee crew, who had the opportunity to sail as part of the final leg of the race, along with crew sailing from ports throughout the UK, will be welcomed back to Belfast with a reception that will ‘kick off’ four fabulous days in August.
Highlights
Fireworks - Thursday 13, Friday 14 and Saturday 15 August
Each evening, a burst of colour will light up the river Lagan and Belfast Lough, which will bring the day’s events to a close at approximately 9.10pm.
Continental Market
Come along and sample the culinary delights on offer in the Continental Market. Enjoy a bite to eat and a continental beer while you soak up the surroundings.
Funfair
All the fun of the fair, with rides for the whole family! From the old favourites such as the carousel and dodgems to the sheer exhilaration of the Cyclone Twist and Superbowl!

If you prefer to use the car, there will be dedicated park 'n' ride sites located on the outskirts of the city. An event shuttle service will bring you from here to the heart of the event. £2 per adult, children under 16 and senior citizens free of charge.
We are also providing a free event shuttle bus service to take you around the event sites.

the fever has come to Belfast, it seems that half the world is coming to come and see the tall ships. I was wondering if anyone can cast their minds back to when thay came the first time?? I was at school, no one and nobody was ever coming to Northern Ireland because they were too scared and low and behold the tall ships came, it was a frenzy of excitement, a mantra went around the school, "tall ships, tall ships have you seen the tall ships???? "tall ships ,tall ships have you seen the tall ships?"
I confess I didn't go but Friends of mine did and talked about how they were trampled into a fence by the stampeding women trying to get a look at the sailors. Now I'm sure it will be different this time.!!!! ;-) Northern Ireland has moved on hasn't it;-)
My great grandfather used to sail on just such a ship out of Portaferry to Australia you can imagine the thoughts that must have been going through his head going off for the first time. The months at sea, the food, the waves, the stars at night. One day he sailed off and never returned, died in the port after reaching Australia................do you think when the oil runs out the sea will increase in importance again as a trading route?? If the sea rises and the tides all change how many people have the skills to still navigate it? are we too reliant on technology??
Speaking of which I went to see the first of the ISEA exhibitions the one at the Golden thread and I'd like to tell anyone who has a techie teenager and they want t o engage them in Art go and see the exhibition. Make sure you have plenty of time, because it takes time to get your head around it. I'd advise taking someone with you and trying out thr interrogation installation ( I'm sure there are a few people In NI who would take to it naturally) can't let anything else on it out of the bag.I was mesmerised by a piece of art that showed a visual trace of the waves coming of a television ariel(sp) It was very meditative and made me think of all the wireless waves and unseen influences that are floating around us all the time. What are they doing to our bodies??? No wonder we dont always feel well with all the unseen enviornmental polution.
Well worth a visit and just a note to anyone who went to the late night art we had over 100 peopke through the doors of the wee gallery at BPW last thursday so me think its starting to work. So put it in your diary for next month................................................maybe see you at the tall ships. Just one thing before i go I did apply to go on the Belfast City Councils Atlantic challange opportunity with the Tall ships but was not picked I did get asked down on a Saturday for an interview but I think the reason I was not picked had something to do with things I have said on this blogg??? or maybe not?? but I think it's a pity that speaking your mind in Northern Ireland put this invisbale barrier between you and opportunities..ho hum.the cost of having moral fiber.

Diary date 12 and 13 September the green living fair at Castle espie, if you have never been before it's well worth the trip now in it's 10 year it links everything with green living, I particularly like the talks and events section I see Tony Weeks the academic, economist and pratical philosopher is speaking again, hes the only economist that makes sense to me.

Lots of artists out and about on Sunday down in the Catherdral quarter leaving off their masterpieces??? for the annual RUA shindig. It's in the Northern bank this year.

Vibrant Belfast
I was talking to someone yesterday who was saying that it was hard to keep up with everything as there was so much going on and they were told off because after all isn't that what we have been complaining about all these years???? not enough positive interesting thinks going on. Well "vibrant" was how Belfast was being described. A Vibrant art community, lots of things going on and a great energy in the air.
So what have I been too in the last week or do ??? cant keep up with myself. Gerry Gleeson is on in the Queen street studios exhibition space I went for the opening and got distracted but it is my intention to go back again and have a quieter look...............I love Diane McCormick massive bugs in the craft ni space in Cotton court, very far removed from the sort of ceramic works that she previously made but you can still see the luster of the beautiful glazes she has always worked with. I love the fact that people have been standing on my piece in Victoria square I like the footprints on it, just don't jump up and down on the "routen wheels".
I've not been around the ISEA exhibitions yet as I was finishing off some of my own work for a change but they look interesting enough to have a look at, just people are confused by the list of things going on.
On a cultural observation note I noticed on the radio they are talking about Sinn Fein leadership being in question, an interesting development Gerry Adams being ousted ??? there would have been no mention of that a few years ago!! so things are moving on in peoples minds. Also the top civil servants are not getting their 1.5 million pounds bonus this year, tut tut !!!!! I'm sure they will miss it after all those years of governing us think of all the bonuses they must have received during that time!!!.........................ho hum have a good week.

Saturday 15 August

The Scrapyard Challenge workshops are intensive workshops where participants build simple electronic projects out of found or discarded "junk" (old electronics, clothing, furniture, outdated computer equipment, appliances, turntables, monitors, gadgets, etc.) So far the workshops have been held 32 times in 14 countries, on 5 continents with different themes including the MIDI Scrapyard Challenge where participants build simple musical controllers from discarded objects and "junk", DIY Wearable Challenge where they create wearable tech projects from used clothing. No electronics skills or any experience with technology is necessary to participate in the workshops.
The Scrapyard Challenge Workshops are built on the premise of encouraging an open and collaborative space for creative ideas and hands-on prototyping.

Look Gromit! An Art Exhibition!
Gromit at belfast Print workshops?????
Experienced animator, and artist Jan Sanger has worked on some amazing projects during the course of her noteworthy career and now shes coming to Belfast! She has spent the majority of her professional life working in the animation film industry. A Grand Day Out, The Wrong Trousers, the major motion picture Chicken Run, and Wallace & Gromit: The Curse Of The Were-Rabbit, are just some of the projects Jan has worked on with Aardman Animations. Most recently she has been working closely once again with the world renowned Nick Park for his Wallace & Gromit TV short A Matter Of Loaf And Death.
With such an impressive CV it is no wonder that Belfast Print Workshop are delighted to announce that they will be hosting a solo exhibition of Jans work in their Gallery on Waring Street opposite the Merchant Hotel. The exhibition will include drawings and photos spanning the course of Jans career illustrating methods used to develop animation characters and set design. Not only will the viewers of this show get an inside look at how the characters are made but the content of the exhibition will also illustrate how these plasticine stars have developed from the original drawings into the recognisable personalities they have become. The exhibition launches on Thursday 6th August from 7pm to 9pm and finishes on 31st August.
Jan will be visiting BPW from 17 28th August taking part in the Belfast Print Workshop Residency Programme where she will develop works in prints, which will be available for sale after her residency.
During her residency, Jan will also be giving an artists talk on Thursday 27th August at 7pm, she will be bringing with her the actual armatures and maquettes used to create some of the characters she has designed and worked on. This exhibition promises to be a fascinating insight into the world of modern animation, which is bound to excite and enthral anyone with even a passing curiosity in this field.

Presentations will run from 12pm – 1pm and from 2pm – 3pm.
From records to walks to garden gnomes, collectors share their interests and obsessions, opening up fascinating collections through images and artefacts. A chance to see hidden treasures and find out why people collect and why certain objects are valued above others. Presentations will run throughout the day with breaks for coffee, cake and conversation. The informal and fast-paced nature of Pecha Kucha means that audiences can join in and leave as they choose. This event is running as part of the August exhibition in the Third Space Gallery.

Artist in Residence
I've moved into my new studio for my 6 months artist in residency post just getting settled in and getting a feel for the place. I'm going to do a number of things while there but I'm not got to tell you about all that yet. But it does have air conditioning and heating what a luxury ;-)
rainy in Belfast
Lots of excitment last week with belfast pritn workshop setting up shop in Victoria square. It was great to get a buzz going right from 7 o'clock and for all the hard work to pay off. You never quite realsie all the hard work that goes into getting these things organised. But it all came together in the end. So now BPWG is open in Victoria square -same opening hours as the centre. Level 1 below pizza express.look out ofr the bricks. Interesting to see what the theme nautical brings out in peoples minds, a few tall ships here and there but glad to see there was room for my flor piece, who said crochet and print do not mix??the McPeake school of music was a nice touch and really helped with the atmosphere. Set things buzzing.
We also have organised a BPW print kit Lino- which offeres the purchaser the opportunity to get 10% off prints in the gallery and a possible group submission show from the fruits of the lino cuts..next year

Josephine is having an exhibition on the theme in La Boca , opening night 11 August I believe. Getting the prize is a good boost. £1000 of unexpected money can go quite a long way these days.
