The Golden Thread Gallery proudly presents On Departure, an exhibition drawn from the most innovative and exciting emerging artists from this summer’s graduate exhibitions at the University of Ulster, the Dublin Institute of Technology, and the National College of Art and Design, Dublin. Co-curated by Sarah McAvera and Ben Crothers, and featuring works by Rebecca McNaughton, Linda Monks, Laura-Ann Morgan, Shaleen Temple and Chanelle Walshe, On Departure showcases an eclectic body of work by a select group of promising individuals about to embark upon their careers in the art world.
ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Rebecca McNaughton received her BA (Hons) in Fine Art from the Dublin Institute of Technology in 2010. In her primarily installation-based work, McNaughton works with photography, print and found objects to explore the theme of life in contemporary cities. Concerned with the concept of futurology, McNaughton studied the predictions of filmmakers, writers and designers from the 1950s to the 1980s as to what the cities of 2010 would be like. The empty shells of half-built apartment blocks and the grand designs of urban planners left unfinished which we see today highlight the unrealised potential of these undelivered cityscapes.
Linda Monks completed her MFA at the University of Ulster in 2010, and has recently been awarded a six month residency at Platform Arts. She strives to create art which amuses both herself and others, drawing inspiration from film, television, comic books, and the comedic moments of everyday life. Working in a range of media, from drawing and photography to video work involving puppets and stop-motion animation, Monks has created a playful body of work, which is charming in its simplicity, but not without gravitas.
In her artistic practice, Laura-Ann Morgan uses performance, photography and video to question our understanding of the body and its environment, exploring the boundaries between the physical body and the body of a space. She is intrigued by the rules and rituals placed within a given space, and makes work in response to the space in which she finds herself. Belfast-based Morgan completed her MFA at the University of Ulster in 2010.
Born in Pretoria, South Africa in 1987, Shaleen Temple moved to Northern Ireland at the age of thirteen with her mother and siblings. She received a BA (Hons) in Photography from the University of Ulster in 2010, and through her work explores themes surrounding South African lifestyle. In the Boys and Girls series, Temple photographs black South African maids and gardeners in their white employers’ homes, examining the changes South Africa has undergone since the end of the Apartheid, specifically the relationship between the workers and their white employers, a relationship which Temple herself experienced as a child.
Dublin-based Chanelle Walshe completed her BA in Fine Art at the National College of Art and Design, Dublin in 2010. Working with text, photography and drawing, Walshe’s work is highly personal, but it is through its specificity that the work confronts universal concerns of identity and the self. Her body of work communicates something of the resistance to the explanation of the self, and the anxiety which can be experienced as a result of attempting self-definition.

Reconnecting the City // £5 including lunch
Belfast people have been disconnected from the City Centre and from each other by roads and walls for many years. There has also been a disconnection from the decision-making processes that created the roads and walls. However, these disconnections are starting to be broken down by locally elected representatives, community activists and community planners working with community groups like the West Belfast Partnership Board and organisations such as PLACE and Forum for Alternative Belfast. This discussion, involving key architects, community leaders and decision makers will highlight current work aimed at reconnecting parts of the city and reconnecting people to the city-making process. Reconnecting the City is part of Feile an Phobail 2010.
Speakers include: Naomi Long MP, Ciaran Mackel and Geraldine McAteer.

Primavera Romana: Walking for A U-Turn
A talk by Stalker/ON based on the Slow Cities Movement. Stalker, an interdisciplinary collective involving architects, landscape architects, artists and others, named after the Tarkowsky film, was formed in the early 1990s when radical Italian student movements were at their height. The collective focuses its projects on interstitial urban spaces, migrations of non-European cultures, urban social mobility and living patterns, observation, mapping, site-specific interventions and new media.

European Pipe Band Championships 2010 and PipeUp! Festival
The European Pipe Band Championships 2010 will take place from 10.30am - 6.30pm on Saturday 31 July at the Stormont Estate in Belfast.
Over 100 of Europe's finest pipe bands will compete to be crowned European Champions.
This great day out for families will also include children's activities and highland dancing, as well as a tented village area selling tartan goods, food and drink.
The competition runs from 10.30am - 5.30pm. The march past will take place 5.30pm - 6.30pm.
Tickets
Families - £14 on the day or £10 if booked in advance
Adult - £5 on the day or £4 if booked in advance
Concession - £3 on the day or £2.50 if booked in advance

This Thursday we see arrivals at OBG its nice to see so many local names actually in the gallery..
In particular Phil Hession, Maria Jankowska and Keith Winter the exhibition is on until 11 Sept and I really hope it has filled the gallery as there are enough good names there to do it.
Maria is recently graduated from UU and had beautiful feminine pieces for her final show. Phils video pieces remind me of home, in a wierd and wondeful way.
Looking forward to it.

A comprehensive salary guide by a specialist recruitment agency in Belfast has revealed the depth of impact the recession has had on Northern Ireland, but also offers optimism for the year ahead.
Across many sectors, salaries have dropped by typically 5-15% and benefits have been capped or withdrawn completely, while redundancies have spread across virtually each business sectors in the region, including the more robust markets of Accountancy and Legal. However the publication by Abacus Professional Recruitment also reveals that positive signs are starting to reflect a more stable labour market with more companies calculating fresh staff appointments.
“Many local firms are certainly more confident and outward looking. Recruitment is returning to their radar, although with justifiable caution. They are smartly managing a blended recruitment strategy by taking on temporary staff and appointing people on interim contract of perhaps 3-6 months. Importantly, the volume of permanent recruitment is rising as well and decisions are being made faster; both positive indicators for the future”; according to Alan Braithwaite (Business Director) at Abacus Professional Recruitment.
Impacts on Markets
The Abacus survey provides an overview on each market plus guidance for companies and job seekers to prepare for the future if economic recovery is sustained. The full report can be downloaded on www.abacus.jobs but the main findings for sectors include:
· Accountancy – some equilibrium gained after periods of pay cuts and redundancies;
· ICT – comparably strong with some skill shortages evident and growth forecast;
· Legal – salary cuts of 10-20% experienced and minimal opportunity for newly qualified solicitors however specialist roles are still in demand;
· Banking – significant job losses and many bonuses withdrawn but next 12 months more positive which follows recent trends in London;
· Insurance – salary cuts experienced in a highly competitive arena but strategic demand for experienced personnel on-going;
· General office roles – volume of temporary roles increasing but salaries squeezed;
· HR and Marketing – regarded as early casualties in an economic downturn however employment opportunities starting to return.
Future Guidance
The specialist consultants at Abacus have also offered some guided to all parties. Companies should develop or review their ‘employer brand’ and re-discover how their business is perceived by employees and potential staff of the future.
“Certainly employers are wise to take stock and review how they can improve their appeal to prospect employees. It shouldn’t start when someone hands in their notice. Our consultation revealed that companies were eager to know if their brand had been impacted by redundancies and that is a refreshing consideration”, said Justin Rush (Business Director) at Abacus.

“Candidates presently in employment are starting to shift from ‘passive’ to ‘active’ status reflecting a slightly more positive outlook. Irish premiere
Prime Cut Productions in association with Belfast Pride announce the Irish Premiere of Vincent River by Philip Ridley. Directed by Sophie Motley (assistant director at the Abbey Theatre, Dublin), Vincent River is the theatrical highlight of the 2010 Pride Festival
Previewing at the Crescent Arts Centre, Belfast on the 2nd August and opening on the 3rd, the production transfers to The Project Arts Centre Dublin for a two week run before performances in The Alley Theatre, Strabane, The Market Place Armagh and The Playhouse in Derry/ Londonderry.
In the last 2 years 248 homophobic hate crimes were reported in Belfast.
Homophobic hate crime is still a significant factor in the lives of many Lesbian, Gay and Bi-sexual people, with more than 20% of respondents in recent research carried out by the Rainbow Project indicating they have experienced some form of homophobic hate crime in the past 3 years. The PSNI define Homophobic Hate Crime as ‘any crime which is perceived by the victim or any other person to be motivated by homophobia’. Homophobic hate incidents have a devastating effect on victims and those who fear becoming a victim.
Emma Jordan Executive Director of Prime Cut said:
‘We are delighted to be producing this important play in association with Belfast Pride. The play deals with the aftermath of a hate crime, and whilst we do not see it as our job to address social issues we realise the unique power theatre has in revealing the human experience behind the headlines. We will be exploring further the themes in the production with a variety of ancillary events such as our outreach workshops and post show discussions. In a utopian world such issues would bear no relevance to everyday life in Northern Ireland but as evidenced in our daily news reports, sadly this is not the case’

Starring award-winning Northern Irish actor Eleanor Methven (Anita) alongside Bangor born Kerr Logan (Davey), this is a beautifully written thriller exploring the classic Ridley themes of sexuality, family, loss and the redemptive power of story telling.

This event will be followed up by a practical workshop on Persuasive Selling Techniques. The workshop aims to help businesses understand the language patterns which build rapport and learn the persuasion skills of top performing sales people.

At each networking event 4-6 businesses will be given the opportunity to have an exhibition space to promote their business. One business per event will also be able to promote their business at the ‘Soap Box’ slot.

Open music media networking on Friday all welcome
Open Music Media - Creative Enterprises Networking Friday 9th July
The sometimes monthly meet-up returns in July as part of the Trans:mission weekend of event at Trans Belfast Festival.
Open Music Media provide an open forum for casual networking and partnership building. Usually centered around a theme, the events generally take an informal Q&A format followed by open chat.
Previously we've welcomed guests from Liverpool Sound City, First Music Contact, PRS Foundation, Rightsman, Island Records, Balcony TV, Sentric Music and many many more.
This month's event in association with Work West's Creating Enterprises Programme welcomes all sectors of the creative industries and hosts representatives from the arts, music, drama, fashion, film, IT and law industries.
We would love to see you there, so please join us between 3-6pm at the Crescent Arts Centre, Belfast on Friday 9th July.

Rose Week will take place on Tuesday 13 to Sunday 18 July in the City of Belfast International Rose Garden in Sir Thomas and Lady Dixon Park
It will include:
Summer Rose and Flower Show (17 - 18 July)
Featuring displays of roses, sweet pea, pot plants, bonsai and cacti.
Children's activities
Face painting, balloon modelling, magic shows and bouncy castle.
Entertainment
Varies each day - includes Irish dancing, orienteering trails, mini crazy golf, street entertainment and Chinese lion dances.
Craft stalls (17 - 18 July)
Summer stalls will offer a selection of crafts and gardening items.
Photography exhibition and workshop
View the winning entries from our Belfast Parks Photographic Competition or take part in our Snapshots photographic workshop.
Rose trials
The trial roses will be judged by a panel of experts on Wednesday 14 July.
A panel of international judges will inspect around 50 new varieties of rose and award points for habit, growth, resistance to disease, flower quality and scent.

Vetting and Barring Scheme
The Vetting and Barring Scheme, created to help prevent unsuitable people from working with children and vulnerable adults and which was due to start on 26 July 2010, has been halted to allow the Government to carry out a review. There is no longer a need at this time to register with The Independent Safeguarding Authority. However, the regulations introduced in October 2009 still apply, meaning that employers are legally bound to carry out an Access NI check on any preferred employee or volunteer prior to offering a commencement of duties which involve regulated activities with children and vulnerable adults. If in doubt, contact Access NI at www.accessni.gov.uk or Tel: (028) 9025 9100.

Sweet taste of success for Ulster Artist

South Belfast based artist Brendan Jamison has been given a taste of success with a commission to create a two metre wide sugar cube sculpture of the iconic Tate Modern building as part of the 2010 London Festival of Architecture.

Brendan, whose career has been supported by the Arts Council over the last six years, is renowned for his imaginative projects and ingenious use of materials. Previously having created installations using wool and wax, his work is now housed in many private and corporate collections around the world. He is represented in Northern Ireland by the Golden Thread Gallery.
Using 71,908 sugar cubes and weighing in at 224 kilograms, the Tate Modern sculpture has been built to a scale of 1:100 and is one of two works he will be showing at the London event. Commissioned by Native Land and Grosvenor, Brendan has also created a sugar model of NEO Bankside, four apartment pavillions adjacent to the Tate Modern.
Speaking about his latest venture, Brendan said: "I was delighted to be offered these commissions, aside from the colossal scale of Tate Modern sculpture, I also enjoyed the challenge of constructing and carving the hexagonal towers of Neo Bankside, a beautiful state of the art development of luxurious apartments designed by world renowned architects Rogers Stirk Harbour & Partners. The views out over Tate Modern and the Thames are truly spectacular.”
Roisin McDonough, Chief Executive of the Arts Council of Northern Ireland, said: “Brendan Jamison has shown that Northern Ireland produces artists of the highest international standards and that an artist’s professional success is based upon receiving the right kind of support at the early stages of their career. Up to 20% of the grants which the Arts Council distributes to individuals goes to up and coming artists providing the vital assistance they need to take their career to that next level.
“To see Brendan’s work exhibited at the festival is an endorsement of the highest order and a testimony to his talent and ingenuity.”
With support from the Arts Council, next Spring Brendan will return to the Ormeau Baths Gallery in Belfast where he will build his tallest and most ambitious sugar model to date. Working on site, the artist will create a 5 meter high turret using a quarter of a million sugar cubes. Rising up through the two-storey space, once completed it will be the largest sugar cube construction in the world.
To tie in with the London exhibition, the Hylands Gallery of Contemporary Art on the Lisburn Road in Belfast is currently exhibiting some of Brendan’s smaller sugar cube sculptures and wax JCB Buckets.

Belfast is changing ;-)
How is it changing? We so many people have asked me this year what are you doing in July in your holidays and I just say well I'm staying in Belfast with a trip to Portaferry thrown in why is that ? well ok we had some riots last night but the city is really changing and there is a feeling of life about the place that does not require everyone to disapear over the July weekend to week to etc etc. Real progress is slow in life and you can see that all around the city little bits and pieces of things are shifting and changing. Late night Art is always fun and there seems to be a critical mass of people around who are doing interesting things and developing interesting linkages. the kind of linkages that make for contented change.
So Black Market on tomorrow as well as St Georges Market. Nice to have something else to go to on a SUnday.
Is Belfast Changing? Certainly being around the catherdral quarter as the Chair of Belfast Print Workshop I am always up and down and around the city centre as a result you really notice the difference in the people out and about. Anyway so what am I looking forward to? well Monday evening its the mooching photo mans opening at the waterfront I think it;'s at seven I was captured in one of his photos on a mooch around the Catherdral quarter. He really is a portrait photographer.. On Thursday it's the Engine Rooms Summer show opening and I have a piece in it so I suspect I will go there 7-9pm I'm showing a piece from my ebb and flow of East Belfast print collection and I think it makes for interesting viewing. Slightly tongue in cheek.
