the belfast print workshop opened their Christmas show and alive in the buzz there was an interesting selection of print. I think it was a nice idea to have different artists in residence prints on show as it adds another dimension to the whole selection. Looks excellent and the new technical manager Jessica Hollywood was introduced to gallery buying public..............I do think it's an excellent selection this year with a very high standard. So lat night the4 belfast print Workshop opened their Christmas show and there was a great turn out and a good start to the festive season. Its open right up until Christmas eve and I think there is a lovely selection this year of past members and new members.
Tonight there is an opening on at the Golden thread 6 oclock. A solo show and another diary date is 10 December up at Malone House the annual Artitex show where Architects get to show what other work they can do starts 7.30.

Continential market and belfast
The Christmas lights are on the festive spirit is in Belfast and life goes on as it does. It's nice to see the light on again in the city centre- was it really a year since the last time? Where od the years go?? do you plan them ? what have you achieved in the last year? has it been two steps forward and one step back?
I've noticed it's been a year of change for alot of people around the economy has shifted emphasis, getting people to think differently. People have had to think differently. I mean what really do you value?? Love, life, friendships? trust ,hope ,truth. Or none of the above. Funny how the old themes still keep coming out . Anyway I'm enjoying my residency in City East the weather has changed over Belfast and the autumn has set in for a change. It makes for an interesting atmosphere in the building. Great skys out across Belfast and lots of hope. Afterall everything is working out better than expected.Everthing is working out better than expected, everything is working out better than expected. It's a kind of mantra that does'nt go away if you keep saying it over and over and over. Anyway might see you at BPW Christmas show later if your going........bye for now.

Continental market Belfast and lights switch on.
Celebrate the countdown to Christmas with our annual Christmas lights switch-on at Belfast City Hall on Tuesday 24 November.
Join Lord Mayor Naomi Long and guests including pantomime characters, a performance by Belfast Community Gospel Choir and children's TV favourites to light up the city.
Entertainment starts on stage at 7pm with special guest compere, former CBBC presenter Kirsten O’Brien. Bob the Builder and his team will be performing hits from his 'Never Mind the Breeze Blocks' album and fellow TV favourites
Fifi Forget-Me-Not and Bumble will 'Rock with the Tots'.
Christmas Continental Market
The Christmas Continental Market will return to City Hall from Tuesday 17 November to Saturday 19 December.
And there will be the usual selection of delightful aromas and tastes to tempt you from the wide variety of German, Irish, Russian and European market traders.

Kevin Atherton’s exhibition at the Golden Thread Gallery Belfast brings together, for the first time in the same space, all three versions of his video journey In Two Minds.
The work, which was originally presented as a two monitor video installation at the Serpentine Gallery in London in 1978, was re-entered by Atherton in 2006 when he produced two additional versions of the work.
Additional Information
Part of a generation that pioneered video and performance art in Britain in the 1970s and early 1980s, Atherton (Manx, b. 1950) has performed a number of pieces that adapt the structure of the press interview or the Q&A session of the artist talk. The work, In Two Minds—Past Version (1978/2006), updates a piece done in 1978 by substituting a new set of answers. In this 2006 version, Atherton responds to the amusingly antagonistic questions posed to him by his twenty-seven-year-old self. The questions are about the work itself and concern the effectiveness of his idea—as well as the effectiveness of idea-based art in general. Frustrated, present-day Atherton not only justifies his intentions in creating a piece based on an internal dialogue, but also explains how the terms of the debate have changed, and how the piece has become more about life than just art. The work reveals not only how video art has technically changed in the interim, but also how the perception of video art has changed over the years, as it has become ubiquitous in contemporary art.

This new audio/visual work, Nagraphobia, was developed from a series of investigations that map the process and effects of recording and dubbing dialogue in cinema and its duplicitous relationship with the image. The work takes references from Alan J. Pakula’s Klute (1971), Jane Fonda’s Radio Hanoi broadcasts and Jean Luc Godard’s Letter To Jane (1972) and examines the authority of the voice through a sequence of disrupted re-mediations of the material.
Additional Information
Allan Hughes is an artist based in Belfast and working out of Orchid Studios. His practice explores psychological relationships and responses to the recorded voice. In particular the voice synchronised to image and its predisposition to conditions of deceit and duplicity. Practicing primarily in video installation, Hughes' works continually renegotiate the extant hegemony within the audio/visual binary, focusing on the role of synchronization and its function as the imaginary object of our desire for a mediated homogeneity, when there is only the inevitable, heterogeneous production of meaning between image and sound. His work makes frequent reference to this heterogeneity in a range of thematic contexts and ultimately examines its impact on a wider vernacular of representation in audio/visual production.
Recent exhibitions of work have been shown at the Irish Museum of Modern Art where he has just completed the Artist’s Residency Programme, Mediations Biennale, Poznan, Poland; UNOACTU, Dresden; Novisibirsk State Art Museum, Russia and the Context Gallery, Derry. His works have also been shown in the London Art Fair; La Sala Naranja Valencia; Ormeau Baths Gallery, Belfast and the Beursschouwburg in Brussels amongst others. Without appropriate Business Succession strategies –

The Business may have to be sold and the proceeds become liable to Inheritance Tax.

BPW Christmas Extravangaza
So the printers in the workshop have been busy working away on their prints all year working on this working on that. Busy, Busy, busy and the result of which be popping out next Thursday at the Cotton court building.
WE have lots to give away on the opening night including dinner for 2 at Cayenne 100 books normal retail price £14.99 and so say nothing of the odd mince pie.

Many people were sceptical when we opening the gallery saying it would never last but here we are still in existance, still giving local artsits an opportunity to sell their work for less commision than purely commercial gallerys, still managing to inspire people inot the love of print, still here after all these years.

Aspiring poets, writers, literature enthusiasts and anyone who enjoys the written word are invited to come along to Down Arts Centre on Sunday 22 November at 2.30pm for an afternoon of poetry and music.
Come in from the cold and spend a lazy Sunday afternoon in relaxed surroundings, listening to a selection of new poems and prose read by local writers, and familiar favourites from established authors. If the mood takes you, join in by reading a piece of your own work, or perhaps your favourite poem. Singers / song writers most welcome.
Write! Down (local collective of writers and artists) and Down Arts Centre present the first in a series of events that celebrate the written word. all aboard the civil partnership train
The Belfast to Dublin railway line has reopened and you are invited to join us on the Civil Partnership Train departing Belfast at 12.35hrs for Dublin on Saturday 5th December.
The Civil Partnership Train is a civil rights initiative inspired by the landmark Belfast to Dublin ‘Contraceptive train’ of 1971 and the historic ‘Peace train’ of 1989. According to Dr Richard O’Leary of the Civil Partnership Train “The purpose of the Civil Partnership Train is to highlight the second class legal status of gay and lesbian couples in Dublin compared to Belfast, a situation which will continue unless the Irish government’s Civil Partnership Bill is upgraded”. Supporters include the Revd. Chris Hudson and Irish Senator David Norris, both of the earlier Peace Train movement.
Earlier this month the Irish Minister for Foreign Affairs, Micheal Martin, called on the political parties in Northern Ireland to implement fully the Good Friday Agreement. However, according to Dr Richard O’Leary “The Irish government has not kept up with Northern Ireland as regards human rights protection in relation to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender persons, and especially on Civil Partnership legislation which Northern Ireland introduced four years ago”. Dr O’Leary added that “Since 2005 gay and lesbian couples whose UK Civil Partnership is recognised in Belfast are decoupled when they arrive at the Irish border town of Dundalk, as their UK Civil Partnership is not recognised by the Irish government”.
The four objectives of the Civil Partnership Train are to encourage the Irish Government to:
IMPLEMENT fully the Good Friday Agreement in the Republic of Ireland and to meet its commitment in the Agreement to provide in the Republic “at least an equivalent level of protection of human rights as will pertain in Northern Ireland”.
UPGRADE the Civil Partnership Bill to provide parenting rights for gay and lesbian couples equal with those in Northern Ireland.
INCLUDE in the Bill recognition of widowed same-sex partners who obtained their Civil Partnership overseas or in Britain or Northern Ireland since 2005.
STOP the proposed amendment to the Bill for an anti-gay opt-out on the grounds of ‘Christian conscience’. The proposed opt-out was not conceded in Northern Ireland.
You can support the objectives above by travelling with us on the train departing from Belfast to Dublin on Saturday 5th December 2009 at 12.35hrs, which we are describing to be a Civil Partnership Train
For persons beginning the journey from Belfast:
Book your own tickets individually as a normal journey by going to the NI railways website www.translink.co.uk and selecting the 12.35hrs train to Dublin (you can suit yourself as to the return journey time although most of us will return on the 19.00hrs train from Dublin). BOOK NOW – there are currently very cheap day return fares available at £7.50 return, but these may soon be sold to other travellers on the train. Booking on line gives you a voucher to be redeemed for a ticket at the train station on the day of travel. Once you have bought your voucher/ticket on the internet, please let us know on civilpartnershiptrain@gmail.com so that we will have some idea of the number of supporters who will be travelling on the ‘Civil Partnership’ train with us. On the day itself, please Assemble at Belfast central station at 11.45hrs. CP train supporters should first occupy the unreserved seating in the carriage behind the dining car.

How many weeks to Christmas?
No matter how often you push it away Christmas keeps coming every year over and over.
When I used to run training on dealing with your finances no matter what time of the year it was I used to ask. Who has bought all their Christmas Presents and there was always one person,no matter what time of the year it was that had already bought everything. Yet many at this time of the year get into debt. Why is it? I suppose it all depend on our learned behaviour to do with money. What we learnt growing up, how we saw people around us dealing with money. How we learned to deal with money growing up effects us as adults. When i do the training for the FSA I always start by saying I'm an artist. That shocks them somewhat because they think how can an artist know about money? why should an artist be telling me something about money? Well sometimes I get confused myself but someone told me that what I do is prove that everyone needs to know about money. No what what you do and no matter what your career is or not you have to be able to deal with money on a daily basis and if you deal with it badly and make lifestyle choices that reflect this then it has a knock on effect on your life.
So in thinking about Christmas, dont get into debt. Think about the long term implications of your actions what you are spending your money on? Why you are spending your money on it? Is it to boast? to make up for things you have done in the year? I remember a women in one of my classes who spent £1500 on each of her 2 children every year. She could not afford this and often carried on the debt from the previous year in order to deal with it. I used to wonder what it was that these children were being taught about life? live above your means for a quick fix, pay it off later- if ever. I just walk around toy shops and wonder whats it all for?? Cheap toys made in dodgy conditions on the other side of the world imported at great cost to the planet to be bought by harassed parents, trashed in two weeks or left after the batterys run out? What is the point???? Is this what Christmas is all about?? me thinks not.
So in your Christmas shopping list think about the impact of your purchasing habits. If you can't afford it -dont. If you feel bad about it,well at least by explaining to the next generation why this is the case it might teach them a lesson about economics, The realitys of life and the big bad world out there. Happy Shopping.;-) or not as the case maybe.;-)

Businesses get set for Global Entrepreneurship Week
Belfast City Council is holding two events later this month in support of the development and sustainability of the small business sector.
‘Finance Your Business Conference’ will take place on Tuesday 17 November at Belfast Castle (9.30am- 2pm) and ‘Spinning the Wheel’, which is aimed at young entrepreneurs from across the city, will take place on Wednesday 18 November at Belfast Big Wheel (1.30pm-3pm).
Both events are also being held as part of Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW). GEW which runs from 16-22 November is a worldwide initiative where business people and budding entrepreneurs meet to network, develop new skills and be inspired. Last year, there were 24,966 events and activities run in 77 countries across the globe with more than 3 million people attending the events.
Finance Your Business Conference is open to small businesses in Belfast in all stages of development. A series of workshops will cover topics including ‘Key skills for surviving tough economic times’, ‘Business finance for beginners’ and ‘Show me the money: Sourcing business finance’.
Businesses will be able to put their financial questions to a panel of bankers and financial experts. Guest speaker is Angela McGowan, Chief Economist with the Northern Bank, who will provide an overview of the current economic situation and forecasts for future recovery.
Spinning the Wheel will give budding young entrepreneurs the opportunity to meet ‘real’ business people and get advice on running their own enterprises from a range of business support agencies.
This networking event is aimed at entrepreneurs aged 18-30 years and will take place on board the Belfast Wheel.
Both events are provided free of charge by Belfast City Council and the European Regional Development Fund. However registration is essential as places are limited.

So can you believe it's the 11th of November already? where do the years go? Bit by bit they drip away. Anything different happening in Belfast? well I've noticed the difference in the people about people are a bit more concentrating on the things that are important to them. There is less money around and so relationships are more important. The people who have worked on their Karma and built good relationships are not as stressed as those among the population that have focused on greed and getting one over on people. You can see it in their faces. As there was such a concentrating on money and property and all the less important things in life, this new age maybe will bring in a more enlightened spirit of people. Maybe people will stop to consider that ever action that they take has an impact on those around them. Can you imagine for an instant a place were people always nice and considerate to each other? Imagine what a difference it would make to your daily existence. If you thought about everything you purchased-where it comes from the impact it had on those along the chain of people involved, the environment.Imagine just what a shift in consciousness that would take in society and the result it would have?

Enigmatic Northern artist Graham Gingles will exhibit at the Peppercanister Gallery in November 2009. Graham Gingles will exhibit drawings and paintings on idiosyncratic themes to supplement his intricate and mysterious wall-hanging box sculptures which have philosophical concerns at their core. Since he first exhibited at the Hendriks in Dublin in the 1980’s his reputation as a complete original has spread internationally, and he has exhibited in Britain, Ireland, Italy, the USA and Canada, to exceptional critical appreciation. This will be his 3rd solo exhibition at the Peppercanister Gallery.

“The brave new world of the Visual Effects Industry”
Belfast City Council in association with Queen’s University are hosting the visit of visual effects expert, Brian Freisinger, to Belfast as part of a partnership initiative to support the development of the Creative Industries in Belfast. Brian is based in California, and is recognised as a leading light in the film and digital media industry.
For the last ten years, Brian Freisinger has been involved with the visual effects industry in a variety of positions, most recently as a supervisor at Disney's ‘ImageMovers Digital’, which just released its first film A CHRISTMAS CAROL, (written and directed by Robert Zemeckis) a fully animated version of the classic film in stereoscopic 3D.
Prior to working at ImageMovers Digital, Brian worked at a variety of companies such as Weta FX in New Zealand, Digital Domain, ESC FX, Zoic, and Manex VFX.
He has worked as a lead and supervisor on films such as MATRIX:RELOADED, MATRIX:REVOLUTIONS, CONSTANTINE, SERENITY, LADYKILLERS, ERAGON, BRIDGE TO TERABITHIA and AVATAR.
His television work includes BATTLESTAR GALACTICA, CSI, and a variety of pilots, as well as national broadcast commercial spots for clients such as Lexus and BMW.
In addition to his work in traditional film and television, Brian has spent the last year and a half working as a consultant, as well as a developer for a variety of "new media" applications, such as iPhone applications, real-time 3D solutions, and a variety of other techniques to deliver high quality visual experiences with non-traditional approaches.

Tasmin Little was already being hailed as one of the finest violinists of her generation when in 2008 she turned the music industry on its head with her trail-blazing project The Naked Violin, in which she offered free downloadable works for solo violin in a bid to encourage newcomers to classical music.
The Naked Violin Tour, is brought to you courtesy of Moving On Music, and while there will be some flexibility within the programme between venues, pieces by Bach, Bartók, Eugène Ysaÿe and Paul Patterson will all be included.

This project is the result of an open call for a series of one day residencies in PS².
Artists, architects and creative practitioners were invited to sent in a proposal, how they would use the space between 9am and 5pm; for performance, research, office work, hide out, craft workshop, studio, cinema, museum, living room, shop or observatory…
The proposals received were all very different, surprising and intense. They play with the notion of a semi private/public space, the relationship to passers-by and the exposure to the street. They address the question, how an activity shapes a space and how the environment shapes the activity- may it be a yoga class, research into Spanish Art History or drawings with tape.

Scopophobia is an exhibition investigating the nature of the city as a personality, like a vast robot, like a wild bushfire, countless faceless buildings tended to by immigrant workers, the advancement of density without apology, the imaginings of a future unknown.
With salutes to Piranesi, Malevich and the Constructivists Winter tussles with perspective, order and obedience to gravity. A construction is setup whereby the viewer is placed within a space but removed from a clear sense of scale, reference or the legibility of distance. A subtle political reference is a comment both on a global and a local sense of void and identity with having no nationality.
Keith Winter lives and works in Belfast. He has recently exhibited in Brisbane, New York and Bahrain.

Warm Moving Bodies at OBG!!

As part of Late Night Art, OBG is hosting a special event to accompany the current exhibition.
Witness the results of three games of Exquisite Corpse adapted for sound, moving image and drawing and played out by a host of local artists. For one night original artwork created using the principles of Exquisite Corpse will be presented throughout the gallery with opportunities for visitors to interact and create throughout the evening. Organised by Ryan Darragh (Oscillations Festival) this evening promises to be full of the unexpected artistic collisions and chaotic harmonies you can expect from a game where unpredictability is the main event.

About the initiative
The initiative helps small Belfast-based businesses to develop the practical skills necessary to think strategically and to develop realistic plans for future growth.
The Strategy in Business Initiative involves a combination of practical group skills development workshops which have been designed to help participants tackle the practicalities of building and sustaining their business.
Each participant is also allocated an experienced business consultant whose role is to help the participant address barriers to growth and to assist in moving the business forward towards clearly defined goals.
This initiative is currently open for recruitment. For further information or an application form contact Barry Rooney below.

Women in Business invite you to join them in celebrating Women’s Enterprise Day in the beautiful surroundings of Belfast Castle on Wednesday 18th November from 12 noon-2pm. Light lunch and refreshments.
Women’s Enterprise Day, is part of Global Entrepreneurship Week, a worldwide movement of entrepreneurial people. It’s been running annually in the UK since 2004 and in that time over 25,000 events have been attended by over 2 million people. Women in Business are delighted to be part of this initiative and welcome you along to celebrate your entrepreneurial success.
Our keynote speaker is Inez McCormack
Inez McCormack, Chair of the Participation and the Practice of Rights
Project. Inez is one of the most influential civil rights leaders in
Northern Ireland today. Ms. McCormack played a critical role in the
1998 Good Friday Peace Accords and continues to advocate for equal rights and fair labor practices for women and minorities as the director of UNISON, the largest trade union in the United Kingdom.
Inez McCormack is a founding member of the Vital Voices Global Advisory Council and continues to contribute to Vital Voices summits, programs & trainings in Northern Ireland and abroad. In 2002, Vital Voices honored Inez at the Global Leadership Awards in recognition of her tremendous achievements. She is profiled in the documentary play Seven, and travelled to New York for the play's premier.
As well as this inspirational speaker, we have as usual Facilitated Networking, and with our last two events being very successful with over 70 delegates in attendance, remember to bring along your business cards.
We also have “2 Mins of Fame“, WIB Free Stand opportunities where you can exhibit your product or service and our new WIB Promotions Table which allows Members to put out literature on their service or business.

Bill of rights for Northern ireland?
At 2.30pm on Tuesday the 3rd of November the Assembly will be debating a motion regarding the Bill of Rights. The full text of the motion is included below.
Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission
That this Assembly considers the Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission’s advice to the Secretary of State “A Bill of Rights for Northern Ireland” as incompatible with the provisions of the Belfast Agreement; notes with concern that the report’s proposals would undermine the democratic role and authority of this Assembly and the Parliament of the United kingdom; and urges the Secretary of State not to implement the report’s recommendations.

This debate comes at a hugely important time for the Bill of Rights and will show clearly where the different political parties stand on the issue. We are determined to show both elected representatives and the members of the media who will be present, the breath of support the Bill has and its importance to communities across Northern Ireland.
Having large numbers of Consortium members present in the Public gallery in Stormont on the day would show the support that exists for a Bill of Rights and we would therefore encourage you and your colleagues to attend the debate. We would be only too happy to provide any assistance in facilitating this.
We would also encourage members to write to their local MLA’s, particularly those proposing the motion in advance of this debate, highlighting the importance of the Bill of Rights. We can provide help in drafting a letter if required.
As ever for planning purposes we would appreciate you informing us of any actions you take.
