Peace walls Belfast

Launching next Thursday: The Urban Environment: Mirror and Mediator of Radicalisation?
Launching Thursday 5th November, Late Night Art, 6-9pm @ PLACE
Continues Friday 6th - Saturday 28th November 2009

An exhibition presenting new research on architecture and sectarianism launches next Thursday night at PLACE. The Urban Environment: Mirror and Mediator of Radicalisation? looked at Belfast, Berlin, Beirut and Amsterdam, and asked how polarisation in these cities affects, and is affected by, the built environment.

Dr Ralf Brand, who leads the research project at the University of Manchester, said: "There's no doubt that great strides have been made in Northern Ireland, politically, but in terms of the urban fabric, considerable problems remain. Our study shows that in areas of conflict, there are very few neutral features in a city. In other words, we have seen many examples of how architecture can inadvertently make things worse. But the good news is that architecture can also make an important contribution to the resolution of conflict. This doesn't mean there's a quick fix to the problem, but professionals from planners to engineers need to be more aware of the importance of architecture to urban conflict."

Everyone is welcome to the launch which takes place next Thursday evening from 6-9pm, as part of Late Night Art for November. Refreshments will be served.

Yesterday in Belfast

I took a dander into Belfast yesterday forgot it was half term, so there were Childfren everywhere, in their new hair cuts out and about shopping and looking. It's funny when you dont have children some holidays pass you buy. While everyone else is looking for things to occupy their childfren over the break, you forget it even happens.
Anyway as I walked along I thought about the schools that all these childfren are going to , what are they being taught? who do they socialise with? is there any intergration in their lives of different religions? IS that goign to have an impact long term on their lives? who they have their first crush on,if they finfish school. I was talking to a man who had gone to school in a loyalist area of Belfast and he was saying that when he was at school if you did music you were a TARGET, you had to move out of class half an hour before everyone else, just to give you a head start or you would get beaten up. He went on to play the drums in a skinhead band. Lost out in alot of his education. Has gone back to education as an adult, gone right through from doing literacy to lots of different courses.I cant help thinking that if we didnt have segragated schools he wouldf not have had the same experience.He would have had an opportunity to mix with different people and life might have been a bit different for him.

So when all you mummys and daddys think about how you dont want your childrens school to be properly integrated. Think about society as a whole or maybe you dont care. Maybe you just want your children to do well and you have no social concious at all.

Queens festival nearly over

Queens festival is nearly over but there is still the weekend to run . I went to see Black Milk last night at the Brian Friel theatre, I found it deeply disturbing, it was set in a Russian railway station but all the actors spoke with Belfast accents one might have thought that one was in any number of places in Belfast. A story of getting one over on other being mean to other human beings, getting pregnant, thinking money is the be all and end all of everything??
Do you know people like this? I do. Ive come across far too many of them. Especially the mean part, being mean at other human beings expense and for what? a quick thrill, a sense of getting one over. Why ?? I've often wondered why? I've noticed it most often in people who have low self esteem who are easily manipulated by others. I'll not name any names...........................The outburst festival comes soon www.outburstarts.com 12- 21 NOvember....................why not go?.

Mary Robinson for EU president?

A citizens campaign has been started to propose former President and UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Mary Robinson, for the new post as President of the EU. The choice will be made by the EU Council, i.e. the representatives of the member states.

This campaign started on Monday 5 October.

Within days over 2,500 people had joined the Facebook group and coverage began appearing in blogs and news sites accross the internet. We have received support from all over Europe (and beyond) and there is a real sense of excitement and potential.

The selection of Mary Robinson would send a signal that the EU is concerned about social exclusion, racism and the protection of human rights and the new President would hopefully be able to exert some influence on EU policies both within Europe and in the wider world.

The candidate most mentioned at the moment is Tony Blair, who would not send out those signals. The EU leaders meet on 29th October and while the appointment will not be decided on then, the discussion abut the post will begin in earnest.

We need to keep the momentum going however so we appeal to each person to pass on the links and information to your friends and any networks you are in. There is a petition to sign at www.maryrobinson.eu/petition.html and the campaign has a website at www.maryrobinson.eu where you can also sign up and add to the list of supporters on Facebook.

Hanna HOuse

Hanna’s House, the feminist peace building organisation would like to invite you to a seminar on: ‘Feminism and Peace building: why women matter’ which will take place on 5 November 2009 in the Clarion Hotel, Cork City.

The keynote speaker is UK woman journalist of the Year (2009), Lesley Abdela, who is also a women’s rights activist and gender adviser to the United Nations.

Panel speakers include:

Bronagh Hinds who leads DemocraShe, an organisation working domestically and internationally on women’s empowerment and leadership in democracy and peace-building;

Mary Kelly and Irene Williamson community activists and peace builders in Belfast linked with the Glencree Peace and Reconciliation Women’s Programme;

Colette Kelleher Director of the Cork Simon Community, and Board Member of the Cork Community Mediation Service and the ISCH.

Niamh Reilly Senior Lecturer and Co-director of the Global Women’s Studies Program at NUI Galway;

Siobhan Curran of Amnesty International Ireland and Chair of the Advocacy Working Group of the Joint Consortium on Gender Based Violence;

The aim of the conference is to promote a critical feminist analysis of post-conflict peace building initiatives, including United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security.

Background information:

The seminar is one in a series of four exploring a feminist analysis of peace building. The aim of the seminar series is three-fold:

1. to open up dialogue between women in the North and the South about the legacy of the conflict;

2. To highlight the importance of women’s role in the transformation of Ireland to a peaceful and just society;

3. To create opportunities for women and men to discuss sexist attitudes, discrimination and exploitation and to engage in a dialogue about the creation of equal, non-violent partnerships both in the private and public spheres.

The first two seminars took place in Derry and Galway on the topics of ‘embracing diversity’ and ‘women’s right to security in the home, locally and globally’. The third seminar will take place in Cork on 5 November 2009 on the subject of ‘feminism and peace building: why women matter’; the fourth seminar will be in Dublin in the Spring of 2010 and will focus on feminist truth recovery. The project will culminate with a Summer School in 2010.

Hanna’s House, inspired by the suffragette and peace activist Hanna Sheehy Skeffington, is a feminist organisation working to provide a space for feminist activists, educators, and transformers to mobilise the collective energy of women to work towards the creation of a non-violent, just society that embraces diversity. For more information about our work please refer to our website at: www.hannashouse.net or contact Shirley Graham, Peace Project Co-ordinator on 01-8786400.

Iris Robinson on the stage at the grand opera house?

last night I saw a stunning performance from DV8 live on the stage at the grand opera house. The dance was about homophobia developed from interviews taken around the uk. It mixed religion, gender politics beautiful dance and quite simply I came away entralled. Why did I mention Iris Robinson? well in the theatre production part of the voice over was the radio interview from iris Robinson talking about how she thought being gay was an abomination. I actually remeber lying in bed listening to the morning show getting really annoyed with her. When it came on in the opera house the audiance gasped. You could feel people literally taking a sharp intake of breath. After the audio snippet of the radio it finished with a"and now the weather" and everyone laughed. I wonder if they did that in other places? is it just that we are so used to that kind of rant on the radio and then we all talk about the weather because we cant belive our ears??

After the production there was a question and answer session with the audiance over all what struck me was Peter Machett in the panel who said "the pope is gay" "there are very senior Ulster Unionist politicians that are gay and yet they were the ones that wanted to keep in the anti sodomy legislation. The audiance asked for names but he was'nt giving any way. All in all it was a fantastic night out. Its on tonight go and see it if you can. Theatre really is a fantastic way of quickly getting over issues that effect different sections of society and this was a brilliant way to do it..............well done Opera house for getting something actually worth while looking at for a change.

First poppy

I saw my first poppy today,quickly in the lapel of a man in the street. It reminded me that another year s nearly over and what have we achieved? What has been achieved? On a big scale we still have Peace .Well a peace of sorts there was a car bomb that went off not too far away from where I live last week. Belfast city centre is buzzing loud and clear, as I write I hear an ice cream van outside ? thats a bit wierd? does it sell cigarettes as well? Who knows, who knows? what is it doing going around at this tme of the night? the city hall is reopened, the Ulster museum as well , the Ulster Hall refurbished. But what of the people what exactly has happened with them? have the people of Belfast changed at all?? How have they changed or are they still thinking along the same old lines?? it's hard to know really. I know some people who have moved here from other places, I know some people who have moved back here after escaping for a while and all along with each little shift up or down society changes bit by bit. Moving back and forward piece by piece.Bit by bit over and over it goes.

Have I changed any? well I've got a little bit older?? wiser?? who can say as I move up into my Birthday it feels good to be alive and a very interesting time to be living in Belfast. Seeing it develop and participating in it's growth, change, shift movement. Out of the gloom and into another being, a more confident way of being a more excepting way of being. Changed poised for movement, into another age. Place space time. I'm looking forward to the next stage. Watch out for the poppy's will your attitude to them change this year???

On another note I have a number of friends and relatives that are waiting for their partners to give birth all into different families all into different social structures. Is in their life time society in N.Ireland going to be very different to the one that I was born inoto???? I suppose it partly depends on who we vote in next time....next year.oh will it be that time already????? ho hum.

In the meantime go and see something in the Queens festival to cheer you up and support all those amazing acts out there.

PS2

Go and see the exhbition in Ps2 Florian is originally from Austria and now based in the new ad hoc studios and has done an amazing sound installation I took a friend of mine from London in and he had an out of body expereince in it.How exactly ? well he invites the viewer to listen into different recordings and when you stop listening to them and take them off your preception is changed a great deal. It's hard to explain what I mean but it makes you realise just how altered our different states are dependant on what we listen too. We are used to putting on music to change our perceptions and emotions but not recordings of ambiant noise to do the same thing.
Ps2 is in the Catherdral quarter opposite Belfast exposed and open most afternoons. You have to knock on the window to get in but please do its well worth a visit. It made me think just how important art is to help people change their perceptions of the world.

The Challenges of Global Biodiversity Loss

An address by guest speaker

Professor Georgina Mace FRS

Imperial College London and Fellow of the Royal Society

Wednesday 25 November 2009 at 6pm

The Great Hall, Lanyon Building

Queen’s University Belfast

As demographic pressures and consumption levels increase, biodiversity decreases, and the ability of the natural world to continue delivering the goods and services on which humanity ultimately depends may be undermined. In 2010 the world’s governments will examine progress made against a target set in 2002 to reduce the rate of biodiversity loss. It is now almost certain that this target will be missed. In this keynote lecture, Professor Georgina Mace will examine the information around biodiversity loss, including what we know about the causes and likely future trends. Most importantly, she will examine why biodiversity loss matters, and what we should do about it.

Ps2 sound installation

Florian Hollerweger: ‘24/7’, sound installation.
Opening: Thursday 15 October 2009, 6-8pm

In the last two weeks, the Austrian sound artist Florian Hollerweger has set up an electro-acoustic installation, a non stop recording system of everyday-and-night voices and sounds. He uses a 'dummy head' with microphones embedded into its ears, which continuously record the soundscape in the space.

Through different delays the sounds are played back again on various headphones. Each of them allows the visitor to 'listen back' to different moments of the acoustic history - a few seconds, a couple of hours, an entire week ago.
Florian Hollerweger’s work allows us to reflect on the threat of public and private surveillance, but also the poetic potentials of sound and memory.
It oscillates between control, secrecy and the temptation to ‘listen in’ and the importance of recollecting sounds as an aspect of constructing memory.

Or- as Hollerweger writes more playfully: ‘In this experiment you are not just the listening observer but also the listened-to performer. So make sound! Leave messages for strangers! Propose to your girlfriend and send her over the next day to hear it! Come out and play!’

24/7 continuous till 24 October 2009

belfast print workshop new exhibition

‘Soulscape’ from Engramme, Quebec – Group Exhibition

Exhibition Starts: 16th October 2009

Late Night opening: 22nd October

Exhibition runs until: 21st November 2009

Canadian Art Gallery Leaves Imprint On Belfast Print Workshop

As part of an international art and cultural exchange Belfast Print Workshop have brought the feel of Quebec to the Cathedral Quarter. Engramme is a print studio and art gallery, very much like our very own Belfast Print Workshop, and last year they produced a memorable and significant artistic project to celebrate the 400th Anniversary of the city of Quebec. This exciting exhibition has now come to Belfast!

Engramme’s goal for this exhibition was to capture and preserve the memories of printmaking artists who have visited Quebec and artists who want to explore the city with their imagination. The concept behind the exhibition was to create “a meaningful artistic heritage around the event’s theme of encounters.”

The 400 miniature prints in the exhibition enable the audience to illustrate and to stimulate their recollection of such “encounters”, whether real or imaginary. To achieve this goal they accepted entries from artists not just from Quebec City but also the work of artists from across Canada and around the world.

For over 35 years, Engramme, just like Belfast Print Workshop, have been involved in an annual collaboration with artists of varying artistic and geographic backgrounds. These “encounters” have facilitated a vast assortment of exchanges with a complex and rich network of cultural and artistic inspirations for everyone. The imaginary journeys and the recollections suggested in the exhibition’s works come together to create a surprising patchwork of unusual perspectives on Quebec City. This medley of original artworks provides a comprehensive vista of the city’s history, epitomizing the relationships between Quebec City, its residents, and its visitors. The title of the exhibition ‘Soulscape’ intrinsically intertwines the concept of a portrait of the city’s appearance and an attempt to capture the very Soul of Quebec itself.

Funny after living in East Belfast all these years you can really see it in the paintings. Especially that feeling down in Sydenham that the planes are far too close for comfort. Flying low over head. I see touches of Monet in it but it's very East Belfast.In a glistening kind of way.

President of Ireland this morning

Well it's not every morning you wake up and are invited to go and see the President of Ireland at the dockers club in North Belfast. But this morning was just such a morning she was there to see the SHIP project. The dockside friendships building a shared future on past memories Exhibition.

The project came about from an acknowledgement that many of the older dockers belonging to the club had fantastic stories to tell but slowly as they died their stories were dying with them. So the dockers club decided to collect the stories and build an exhibition and a series of books. Strange going into the club, the curtains were drawnn the lights were on, it was hard to remember that it was 10.30 in the morning. Lots of people were gathered to listen to the President but before she came. The compare started to identify people in the crowd and ask for a round of applause for them. It was getting so that I thought he was ging to name everyone individually. YOu could tell he was used to the job and at any moment I thought he was going to burst into song(that came later). The president came in with her husband and at once started to walk around the crowd and I got my third presidential handshake. One for Clinton, one for Mary Robinson now Mary McAleese. Quick on her heals was her husband who smiled and shoke hands as well.

Liam Quinn the chairman of the project spoke highly of the president and the background to the project before the President herself spoke, she talked about her memories of the dockers from her expereince of being brought up in Ardoyne and her friends who fathers worked in the docks. She spoke of the ability of the club to leave politics at the door for the last 30 years and it's ability to survive because of it and she spoke of the importance of keeping the memories alive of the previous generations.
After a presentation and a song off (she didnt sing it was a dockers song)she went in the ministerial cars to the Colloden
for some talks. As I said my thanks and goodbyes I walked around to where I'd parked my car and noticed that the ministerial cars had been blocked by a Belfast City Council refuse collection lorry. Always something to delay things in Northern Ireland is'nt there ?? Some blockage or other getting in peoples way. But things are changing you could here it in the jokes in the club. The compare introduced one man by saying this is the man that arrested me once...............but thats so long ago. Maybe the time of whatever you say say nothing is over??

What of the on the edgers ? and Belfast

Well stop press the news is that Tonya McMullan has been offered a solo exhibition in Serbia? Who would have thought? In the contemporary art museum. So that's excellent news. Wait here for more information.............................. so I was reading in the times newspaper during the week that there is a great worry that NI is going to erupt in volance. Funny as on the peace line you dont get that feeling at all , at all. It's pretty calm, I did hear that Hilary Clinton is coming over on Saturday and Mary McAleese is being around and about. I got an invite to see her Monday. Always good to see the great and the good..............around and about. So the papers will be full with it all of people coming to save the poor people of Northern Ireland from distruction. have you heard this all before??? I have.

I suppose it would be good to get your hand shaking done in the media so that you could claim responsability afterwards so having brought NI back from the brink???

Funny, here on the peace line it's raining a bit, people are in a Friday night mood and life goes on........................................

back with a vengence

Ok so that was a nasty flu but now I'm back on track with only a bit of a cold and a cough. Nsty nasty, tempreture went up to 37 not quite swine flu level of 38 but it was getting there. Anyway it gets all the nastyness out of you-or so they say. On the edge exhibition still ongoing, still getting request for annointments( I mean appointments) RUA exhibition on until 1 Nov it's all go. All go.

Tuesday 6 October 2009

This time last year?

I WAS LOOKING AT MY POST FOR THIS TIME LAST YEAR what was going on? has Belfast progressed? yes. HOw well in lots of ways I think, in the high level side of life there are talks about handing over policeing and justice to local representitives, the water charges has not been brought in so there is a knock on effects budgets have to be cut, not popular . Maternity services are being cut as there is not enough funds in the kitty to provide for all the babys being born. NI is finally seeing things that only ever happened in the UK cuts in services. Lower down the food scale Belfast is Buzzing(not just in a marketing sense) the night life has returned and while budgets are tight people are still out enjoying themselves. Art has come from everywhere, people are connecting,alliances are being made. Relationships started, others complete their cycle, babies being born, structures changing, others staying the same. People coming back to live in dear wee NI to try again at living here. Life goes on.Another turn on the wheel another cycle of change, another step into something else. Just leave the begrudgers behind.Encourage them to move on. On step on.

Miserable being sick ?

Why is being sick so miserable? I suppose it comes with the season. A chill is in the air the leaves are turning the nights are drawing in but are we leting it bother us in Belfast? No way the reason being that quite simply there are so many things to do. A friend of mine brough a grup of school kids to culture night to see all the art , they usually go to newcastle or Dublin but they say now what is the hassel when there are so many things to see right here at Home to get you excited. So is'nt that progress? of coarse it is even 2 years ago it was hard to say that. Funny how it goes all this vibrancy stuff. I'm still ill trying to get rid of the cold but the feedback on the exhibition has been good so far, I think I have just about recovered and my brain is already ticking over on the next thing to be working on.

People are still making appointments to see the exhibition so thats good there is still time. 079 847 847 35. See you soon.

sick today and RUA opening

There has been that much going on that I have finally stopped and caught the flu, thought I be better by today but went out last night to RUA opening as it was the first time I was in the exhibition and thought I should make the effort. So it's in the Northern bank buildings and they have done a good refit in the building and I think it shows another step in the right direction for the RUA. I want to go back and have another look which is a good sign. Great to see some more crochet out there and a good selection of a certain area of Art in Northern Ireland. I got my what the fairy left behind print in and think it's quite beautiful there up on the wall kinda there but not there..........a wee bit like the fairys.
Late night art was on again last night and it's really good to see it really working so many people out and about. Me I had to go home to bed ;-(. Cough cough dont want to spread the germs.
