Tidal power on Strangford lough and the Commodore

Routen wheels background
This is a bit of background info to anyone who looks at my piece in the Victoria square tonight and is wondering what on earth it is. I took these photos while sailing this year on Strangford lough . At the mouth of the lough is the Routen wheels which are a sailing hazzard, large whirlpools of water that can whip your boat in the opposite direction, or depending on the size of the boat drag you around in circles. Although I think the colours of the piece I got more from my recent trip to Ibiza, it's thatblue that is so important to your emotional well being on hliday.

World renowned dancer, teacher and choreographer Felipe de Algeciras will be performing in the Black Box as part of the Flamenco Pena of students from FlamencoNI on Sunday August 2nd.
Born in Algeciras Felipe started dancing at the age of 13. In his late teens he founded and became chief choreographer for “El Grupo Soleá”. He moved to London in 1991 where he performed at the Shaw Theatre. Following his debut in England Felipe has gone on to dance at Sadlers Wells, the House of Commons and has appeared with the English National Opera at London’s Coliseum. Felipe’s powerful footwork can be heard throughout the sound track for the film “The Mask of the Zorro” staring Antonio Banderas and most recently has launched his own company “Alma”. Felipe spent last year touring in Japan, Dubai, France and Austria but has now returned his native Algeciras, Spain where he continues to teach and perform.
CHANCE TO LEARN FLAMENCO DANCING AND FLAMENCO GUITAR
Felipe de Algeciras will also be teaching a 4 day Intensive Flamenco Dance course from Friday July 31st until Monday, August 3rd. All classes will be accompanied by guitarist Lucas Gonzalez, www.myspace.com/gonzalezlucas who will also teach a one hour guitar class each day. A cajon class may also be offered (details of which have yet to be confirmed).
Felipe will teach 2 levels, Elementary and Intermediate. Each class will last 1 1/2 hours on all 4 days. On the Friday the Elementary class will start at 6 pm and the Intermediate class at 7.30 pm. On Saturday and Sunday the Elementary class will start at 12 noon and the Intermediate class at 1.30 pm. On Monday, the Elementary class will start at 4.30 pm and the Intermediate class at 6.00 pm.
The cost for each class will be 15 pounds per hour or with payment in advance (at least 48 hours) 50 pounds for all 4 days. With payment in advance (at least 48 hours) the cost for both classes for all 4 days is 100 pounds. Payment on the day of the course will be 15 pounds per hour.
For those who have never danced Flamenco before,, Maria Therese Connolly is also offering a taster class. The times for this class are Friday 5.00 pm, Saturday and Sunday 11.00 am and Monday 7.30pm. The cost is 8 pounds per hour or 30 pounds for all 4 days. Payment on the day of the course will be 8 pounds per hour.
The guitar workshop will be 1 hour each day and will be taught by Lucas Gonzalez. The times for this class are Friday 5pm, Saturday and Sunday 11am and Monday 7.30pm. The cost is 12 pounds per hour or 40 pounds for all 4 days. Payment on the day of the course will be 12 pounds per hour. Guitarists will also be able to sit in on the dance workshops and receive instruction from Lucas during the workshops.

Free European circus..this Sunday
To all enjoyers of circus,
Belfast Community Circus School is very proud to present the Caravan of Creativity show, which will be part of our Summer Sundays.
The show is the finale of a pan-European youth circus project, which is hosted by the Belfast Community Circus School this year. Twenty eighth talented young people from Paris, Luxembourg, Amsterdam, Berlin, Brussels, Tampere (Finland) and Belfast have been invited to take part in this project and will amaze you with their skills and showmanship.
Shows will be held on August the 2nd in the Circus School at 2pm and 4 pm. There are no advanced tickets for sale, and seats are limited so we would advice you to come early!

All will be reveiled tomorrow night 7-9 level 1 ( below Pizza express) look out for the bricks..........................

BPWG are extremely excited and honoured to be the first art organisation EVER to have a gallery space in Victoria Square.!
This unique ‘happening’ continues until 31st August with the gallery space open during normal retail hours, which means late nights and weekends too! There will be lots of activity throughout the month with artists dropping by to talk about their work, educational workshops and printmaking kits available so you can test your artistic abilities and create an original print of your own!
Come along and get your original ‘Tall Ships’ souvenir. Also don't forget on the opening night there will be a £1000 prize awarded to the print that best captures the spirit of the Tall Ships Festival! All artworks exhibited will be available for sale...................................................

Belfast signage scheme shows
the way for other cities
An award-winning scheme designed to help visitors find their way around Belfast more easily, is literally signposting the way for other cities across the world to do the same.
Belfast City Council’s unique visitor signage scheme, which features signposts and information boards at a wide variety of key locations around the city, is being hailed as an example of best practice.
Council officials are now being invited to advise other cities on how they can implement similar schemes, to the benefit of their own tourism industries.
“With a record number of 7.1 million people visiting Belfast in 2008, the Council has long recognised that making it easier for people to find their way around is one way of making their stay more enjoyable,” explained Councillor William Humphrey, Chairman of the council’s Development Committee.
“To this end, the council developed a Cultural Tourism Visitor Management Plan, which is designed not only to help the council and the tourism industry meet the need of visitors to the city but also to encourage them to visit other parts of Northern Ireland.
“Signage has been central to the plan, and we developed some very innovative ways of making them both more appealing and more informative for visitors. These have included not only very distinct directional signs, but maps and three-dimensional illustrations of key buildings, to give people a greater feel for the space around them.
“By helping to make the city easier to navigate and understand, we are not only improving the experience of visitors to Belfast, but also helping our own residents – often just by revealing a previously hidden architectural gem to them,” said Councillor Humphrey.
The success of the signage scheme was endorsed at the recent Association of Town Centre Management (ACTM) Awards, when it won the ‘Centre Move’ category: this international award is designed to recognise projects or schemes which have done the most to improve the ease and quality of movement into and around city centres around the world.
“The award is a worthy testament to the hard work to all involved, from Belfast City Council, Belfast Visitor and Convention Bureau, Belfast City Centre Management and all our many partners in the public and private sectors, NGOs, voluntary organisations and charities in helping to make the experience of those visiting the city as enjoyable as possible,” said Councillor Humphrey.
“As a result of this award, and the subsequent hosting of the ATCM conference here in Belfast, the expertise of our officers is now being called upon by other cities, particularly elsewhere in the United Kingdom, who are looking to bring their own signage schemes up to the high standards we have set.
“We can be justifiably proud of this, and it is further evidence that Belfast is leading the field as a vibrant and growing visitor destination,” he concluded.

Installation and documentation of a creative community initiative in Ballykinler, Co. Down

With its seaside location and the Mourne Mountains as a backdrop, the small village of Ballykinler in Co. Down seems idyllic. Unless you take a wrong turn and end up at the gated compounds of a long established British Army site? A complex situation, not just for the two different spellings of its name on road signs.
How do you live there as a young person? How do you make changes or at least influence the social infrastructure? And where does art fit into all of this?
Anne-Marie Dillon, artist and co-founder of the Ballykinler Creative Forum and the initiator of many activities in her home village, brought together a group of young people to work on small projects, to have fun and to kickstart a process of creative engagement with the social and built environment.
Bus stop was originally built outside a disused school in the centre of the village. The Creative Forum has argued for years that this should be used as a community arts centre- a recent request was again refused. The installation highlighted the fact that there isn’t a sheltered bus stop and the direct action revealed the lack of social provision, the divisions in the village and the opposition to a proper bus stop from parts of the community in fear of anticipated vandalism.
For PS², the bus stop is re-assembled together with a personal documentation of the history of the Creative Forum; its past projects, the community structures, stakeholders and fractions, struggles, achievements and set backs. A history of an initiative which set out to provide social and creative activities for the small village in the past ten years; from ad hoc child care to youth disco’s, from shopping tours for elderly people to water sports for the youth. What distinguishes these social activities from other initiatives, is the strong artistic element which makes these events into happenings or performances.
This project is seen in connection with an ongoing programme by PS² of art initiatives in a rural context. How difficult it is to introduce art and creativity into a smaller town or village in Northern Ireland, is exemplified with this initiative by the Creative Forum in Ballykinler. It shows the wide gap between urban and rural conditions in terms of cultural provision, desires and political preconceptions.

Anyway I'm moving into my artist in residency opportunity at the moment getting the studio ready as well so who said JUly is a quiet month???? Anyway I will forward a few bits of info I got sent when I was away and then cathc up better soon. Bye for now

Interesting to see how the orange parades are being rebranded as orangefest-one more set on the road to some kind of change, there are certainly more people around the City and lots of tourists out and about. It's part of Belfast city of festivals stuff that the council are leading.

Innovation fund for local tourism businesses
The Tourism Innovation Fund has been launched to encourage local businesses to attract more visitors to Northern Ireland
The overarching objective of the Tourism Innovation Fund is to help local businesses develop projects that will boost tourism in Northern Ireland and in turn increase the revenue derived from tourism. The main aims of the Tourism Innovation Fund are to enhance the growth, quality, competitiveness and sustainability of tourism in Northern Ireland by stimulating product development and improving the visitor experience.
Funding project themes
Funding will be considered under three main project themes:
Visitor Servicing Initiatives - to present unique, individual and compelling experiences for visitors to Northern Ireland
Planning and Development - to develop potential product innovation projects
Accreditation Schemes - to raise and improve quality standards
Who can apply for funding?
The private sector, including companies and other legal entities and individuals are eligible to apply. The entity should be able to demonstrate it can be categorised as a small or medium-sized enterprise (SME).
Public sector organisations, including commercial and non-commercial semi state organisations and local authorities are eligible to apply for the funding. So too are voluntary or community organisations.
In assessing all projects, emphasis will be laid upon the consistency of how well the proposal fits within the Northern Ireland Tourist Board's (NITB) corporate priorities. How much financial support can I expect?
The financial assistance depends on what sector your business operates within. The following thresholds apply:

Short Term Aid Scheme
Financial help for your business
The Short Term Aid Scheme launched by Invest Northern Ireland aims to provide eligible businesses with financial assistance to enable the retention of key staff while businesses plan, and where necessary, restructure for the future so they are ready to take advantage of the upturn.
Who can apply?
The Short Term Aid Scheme is open to small, medium and large businesses in the manufacturing and tradeable services sectors which were not in difficulty prior to 1 July 2008 and which, although fundamentally viable, are experiencing short term difficulties.
To be eligible for the scheme businesses must also be able to meet or have the potential to meet both the following criteria by 31 December 2010:
total sales of over £100,000 per annum
sales outside Northern Ireland greater than 25 per cent of turnover or greater than £250,000 per annum
Businesses eligible to apply must also be able to demonstrate a need for support and any actions already taken to address its current difficulties.
How does the support work?
The Short Term Aid Scheme is available from 1 June 2009 until 31 December 2010. The maximum support available per business is €5000,000, or approximately £450,000 at the current exchange rates, less any other De-Minimis Aid offered between 1 January 2008 and 31 December 2010.
Financial assistance will be offered to eligible businesses by way of a grant for salaries to maintain key skills within their workforce. There will be three rates for grant support:
80 per cent for small businesses
70 per cent for medium sized businesses
60 per cent for large businesses

Harri Pälviranta (b. Tampere, 1971) has a BA in photography and an MA in Mediescience from Turku Arts Academy and has studied political science and philosophy at Tampere University in Finland. He is currently working on a PhD. at the University of Art and Design in Helsinki.
Pälviranta's first solo exhibition was about men, their roles and identity. For his graduation project at the Arts Academy of Turku, he presented photos of World War II combat fields and other sites of violence under the title Badscapes. He continued to explore the connections between the world of men and violence in the 2007 exhibition Battered. Pälviranta found his subjects when he accompanied the police in Turku in their investigations of violence at night. Apart from taking photographs, Pälviranta also writes about photography.

Ngaire Jackson gets on Travalger square plinth
Ngaire Jackson (my sister) has got a spot on the travalger square plinth for August.
Ngaire is an artist based in Lisburn Art centre with my other sister Clare lawson they are working in Lurgan at the moment working on revisioning one of the estates.
Ngaire went to art collage as a mature student after initially trainng as a legal secretary. After graduating from her MA she has woking hard in the Lisburn area with public sculptures and festivals. I look forward to seeing what she does.

beautiful in Portaferry
Nice to see so many tourists around in Portaferry, if the weather was like this all of the time you would never go anywhere else. The sailing continues this week with the bar bouy race Thursday and Strangford lough regatta Friday. Strangford festival is on Friday. If you want to see the start of the race on Thursday go down about 5 o'clock to see the lough filled with boats as they all race out to the bar bouy at the mouth of the lough.

Late night art Belfast last night
I was not going to go to late night art last night because I have too much on and too much going on but decided to take the time to go and see as it's important to take the time for Art in your life. I took Tonya from Solo who was over from Edinburgh and her friend Martin who was literary "off the boat" first time in Ireland.
First they went to Belfast Exposed and were really impressed with which the speed of the exhibition about racism was put on in the gallery particularly with respect of the recent events.
After a quick drink in the John Hewitt it was over to the Golden thread, it was the first time I have seen the unbuilt exhibition on in the gallery and I have to say Architecture exhibitions are often boring but what was interesting was it shows you what can happen when you let artists look at the medium. What strikes me about the first gallery is that there are lots of modern iconic building that have never seen the light of day in NI , is the the planners? the lack of political will? the mentality of the population? why, why, why. Then we have information about Craigavon, interesting propaganda that was in the newspapers at the time about it " new life" . There is a good video from residents that moved there. But something resonated with me, because of the planning policy's that went on at the time all sorts of problems happened in Craigavon and because of that my two sisters Ngaire Jackson and Clare Lawson of Red Apple arts are doing a big project on one of the estates in order to bring back some community co-hesion through Art, sculpture, community gardens etc, etc, etc. So one bad planning policy developed a certain kind of society and then more money has to be thrown at the problems years later.
In gallery 2 I love the way the motorway has been mapped out on the floor and the discussion of slum clearing on the planning maps, where did all those people go? Flats? Craigavon ? where are there decdendancs now? Was it a concious planning decision to cut off West Belfast from the city centre? who made the decision? who was in power at the time ? who voted form them to be in power? who could vote? and on and on the cycle goes.
Miguel Martin had a beautiful drawing of sentimental things that people brought into the project space. The things were housed in little cardboard box houses on the floor, little keepsakes hidden away just like in real life. Special but only to those who know the history. Miguel is based in Belfast platform for the Arts.
Next onto Belfast Print workshops gallery with predominately blue exhibition, It's my image on the poster from a print called what the fairy left behind, inside it interesting to see what just the colour blue can do in an artists mind. Great to see lots of sales. But maybe I'm biased because I'm the Chair of the organisation.
Over then to PS squared ( in the blue picture up above) were Catherine was on overdrive she always has something to eat there which I think is nice.crazy after being there from yesterday morning, good to have the space really doing something different now.
Next it was off to Queen Street studios, edge past the bingo players outside and it was up the stairs for your exercise to visit Brendan and the golden trolley( good title for a film) Gary Shaw is showing at the gallery and it says something that I went back a second time to visit it the "meanderings" still work, while there I was talking to a guy who was first time at the Late night art and was raving about it, his brother bought one of the paintings and at £50 - £250 they are very reasonable. It was great to see another convert to the joy of art. Lastly be was to the Black box for the end of tour get together and Catalyst art with there music, great pizza and good conversation.
So what did everyone think that went ? well I was delighted I went out because I wasn't going to , Tonya was pleased to visit some of the galleries that she had not before Martin from Edinburgh felt he was right in the heart of the "happening" of Belfast and we all had a great evening. So that's a few more converts to late night Art. May more continue. Brendan at Queens streets studios is talking about doing something special with his trolley next time and the other thing I noticed is that there are still lots of people in Belfast, other years everyone leaves because they don't want to deal with any hassle where as this year people are hanging around. Great to see and another wee change in Northern Ireland.

Late night art tonight

“raster-noton . archiv für ton und nichtton” is meant to be a platform — a network covering the overlapping border areas of pop, art and science. emerged from the fusion of the two labels rastermusic and noton (in 1999) they realize music projects, publications and installation works. common idea behind all releases is an experimental approach — an amalgamation of sound, art and design.
so far the catalogue of the label consists of about 70 releases. most of the projects follow the concept of a series with contributions by very different artists such as, william basinski, alva noto, ivan pavlov aka coh, ryoji ikeda, ryuichi sakamoto or carl michael von hausswolff.
olaf bender and carsten nicolai run raster-noton. the label is based in chemnitz / germany.
We will be showing thier CD designs, print and audio visual works.

How do we occupy or define our personal space? What is the relationship we have with our city, our home and the architecture that defines that space? Evelyne Leblanc-Roberge’s photography is an exploration of urban geography, the tension between public and private space and its impact on the individual narrative. Through the media of digital colour photography, collage and online media, Canadian artist Evelyne Leblanc-Roberge explores the impact of urban landscapes on identity, and invites viewers to observe each mise-en-scene and recreate their own narratives.
In 2008, she spent 7 months in China where she continued working along these lines. In her exhibition Wet Markets Evelyne presents a personal journey, underlining the small details that caught her eye over there. This is a collection of observations in and on China in construction, in transformation, with all the tensions between tradition and modernity, wealth and poverty, urban/rural, the ephemeral and the perpetual.
