This is a Marianne Elliot and Michael Fitzpatrick, in conversation with William Crawley, consider contemporary anxieties and concerns around religious faith, offering insights around the enduring power of religion, its specific appeal to the poor and marginalised and the problems it raises for contemporary secular societies.
Professor Marianne Elliott, was born in Belfast and is internationally recognised as one of Ireland's leading historians, best known for her acclaimed biography Wolfe Tone: Prophet of Irish Independence, which won numerous awards. Professor Elliott has also played an important role in the promotion of peace efforts in Northern Ireland, most notably serving on the Opsahl Commission in 1993 and co-writing its report, 'A Citizens' Inquiry'. Her research interests are political and cultural history, religious identities, eighteenth-century Ireland and France and the history of Ulster. www.belfastexposed.org
